生体内色素は，その由来により血色素性色素と非血色素性色素に分類される．ピリルビンは前者の，メラニンは後者の代表である．ともに褐色調を呈するが，存在部位や存在様式により通常のHE染色標本でも鑑別は可能である．しかし，正確な同定には特殊染色が必要である．病理形態学では，色素の確認と同定は極めて重要である．例えば，腫瘍細胞にビリルビンが証明されれば肝細胞癌，メラニンが確認されれば悪性黒色腫の診断が下される．本稿では，血色素の生理的な基本事項を確認し，生体内色素の染色法に言及する．
