Constraint is the element factor or a subsystem that works as a bottleneck. It restricts an entity, project, or system (such as a manufacturing or decision making process) from achieving its potential (or higher level of output) with reference to its goal. On the productivity side, it can also refer to the positive ideas of focus and optimizing goals by specifying relevant constraints and finding "corner solutions" via linear inequality constraints, as in Linear programming or Constraint optimization. Constraint is being developed as important in the context of emergence as an explanation of what is added out-over the sum of the parts.
Constraint may refer to:
- Theory of Constraints, in business management
- Loading gauge or structure gauge (constraints in engineering)
- A constraint on constrained writing, in literature
- For example, Oulipian constraints
