ドット（dot）とは、点のことを指す。単に「ドット」と言う場合には「・」（中黒：なかぐろ）や、ドメイン名やIPアドレスなどの区切りに使われる場合の「.」ピリオドなどを指す。

用法・利用・表現などについて

• 物理学において、なんらかの方法を用いて3次元のすべての方向について移動を不可能にされた電子の状態を、量子ドットと呼ぶ。

• 数学において、ユークリッド空間R³に標準的に定義される内積をドット積と呼ぶ。

• コンピュータグラフィックスの世界では、最小の描画表現を行う単位となり、プリンター・イメージスキャナなどの場合では1インチ当たりの表現単位として利用される（dpi：dots per inch：dots/inch）。画面解像度参照。ドットはしばしばピクセルと混同されやすいが、ピクセルが画像情報の最小単位であることに対して、ドットはデバイスの物理的な最小単位を示す。従って「複数のピクセルを1個のドットで示す」あるいは「1個のピクセルを複数のドットで示す」ということが生じる。
  • 1990年代までのテレビゲームやコンピュータグラフィックスで多用された、解像度の粗い画像をドット絵と呼ぶ。慣れなければ非常に見にくいが、独特の味わいもある。
  • マトリックス状の画像の1表示単位がなんらかの理由で正常に表示されず、その部分だけが欠落した状態で画像が表示されることをドット落ちと呼ぶ。

• デザインでは、「水玉模様」とも呼ばれる、地色に対し一定の幅で小円・点を染めたものを「ドット柄」と呼んでいる。水玉の径が小さいほど正装ではフォーマル寄りになる。直径1～2ミリのものをピンドット、2～3センチのものがコインドット、中間をポルカドット（Polka dot）と呼ばれ、ネクタイやワイシャツに使われる。

• ė （「e」の上に点）のようなダイアクリティカルマークの種類としては、ドット符号を参照のこと。

• 小鳥の目は小さい点であることから、「ドットの目」と表現されることがある。

• ドメインを取得する際、「.」と「com」を語呂合わせとして用いる事が多い。「.com」を「どっと込む」と言う意味に喩えて商売繁盛の縁起担ぎにしていることもある。
