• 急性咽頭炎で受診する多くの例はウイルス性で、本疾患は5-15%程度

• Streptococcus pyogenesによる咽頭炎(上気道炎)
• 5類感染症定点把握疾患
• 感染から1～数週間後に起こりうるリウマチ熱や急性糸球体腎炎(溶連菌感染後急性糸球体腎炎)があるために診断が必要となる。
• 症状：咽頭痛、発熱で発症。消化器症状(嘔吐)がありうる
• 身体所見：口蓋扁桃発赤・白苔付着、軟口蓋の点状出血、苺舌。全身の点状紅斑様、日焼け様の皮疹、口囲蒼白がみられる場合もある(猩紅熱)
• 診断：センタースコア2点以上で迅速検査もしくは培養施行し陽性ならば治療。
• 治療：ペニシリン系抗菌薬が第一選択で、治療期間は10日間。ペニシリンにアレルギーがある場合にはマクロライド系抗菌薬を考慮する。治療はリウマチ熱や化膿性合併症(扁桃周囲炎)の予防のために行われ、急性糸球体腎炎の予防効果は証明されていない
