Environmental change is a change or disturbance of the environment most often caused by human influences and natural ecological processes. Environmental changes can include any number of things, including natural disasters, human interference, or animal interaction. Environmental change does not only encompass physical changes, but it can be things like an infestation of invasive species is also environmental changes.[1]

- Verification of presence of caprolactam in sprouted achenes of Fagopyrum esculentum Moench and its influence on plant phenolic compound content.
- Kalinová JP1, Tříska J2, Vrchotová N2, Moos M2.Author information 1Faculty of Agriculture, University of South Bohemia, Studentská 13, České Budějovice 370 05, Czech Republic. The aim of this work was to confirm the previously described presence of caprolactam in dry and sprouted achenes, as well as in achene exudates of common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench). When the lyophilized sprouted and dry buckwheat achenes, along with exudates from growth experiments, with caprolactam-free medium were analysed by HPLC, no caprolactam was found. After addition of caprolactam into the growth medium, we confirmed the uptake of caprolactam in the lyophilized sprouted buckwheat achenes. The uptake of caprolactam is also a function of light conditions during the growth experiments. Caprolactam also inhibits the content of phenolic compounds; especially rutin, vitexin, isovitexin, orientin, and homoorientin in buckwheat plants.

- Cold-set whey protein microgels as pH modulated immobilisation matrices for charged bioactives.
- Egan T1, O'Riordan D1, O'Sullivan M1, Jacquier JC2.Author information 1Institute of Food and Health, School of Agriculture and Food Science, University College Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4, Ireland.2Institute of Food and Health, School of Agriculture and Food Science, University College Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4, Ireland. Electronic address: jean.jacquier@ucd.ie.AbstractThe ability of cold-set whey protein microgels to function as pH-sensitive immobilisation matrices for bioactives was investigated. A pH dependent interaction was confirmed between the microgels and charged bioactives and this binding was impeded by the presence of competing ions in the solution, suggesting an electrostatic interaction. The use of a computer generated prediction model for the pH-dependent association of the microgels and further bioactives (including cationic and anionic peptides) was validated. The prediction model was efficient at determining the pH at which the maximum microgel-bioactive interaction occurred. This study highlights the capabilities of these food-grade whey based microgels as matrices that enable the immobilisation of a variety of bioactives by a charge interaction, and shows the potential for these matrices to function as smart delivery systems, in which uptake and release of bioactives is facilitated by environmental pH change.

- Three human cell types respond to multi-walled carbon nanotubes and titanium dioxide nanobelts with cell-specific transcriptomic and proteomic expression patterns.
- Tilton SC1, Karin NJ, Tolic A, Xie Y, Lai X, Hamilton RF Jr, Waters KM, Holian A, Witzmann FA, Orr G.Author information 1Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, and Fundamental & Computational Sciences Directorate, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory , Richland, WA , USA.AbstractThe growing use of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) in commercial and medical applications raises the urgent need for tools that can predict NP toxicity. Global transcriptome and proteome analyses were conducted on three human cell types, exposed to two high aspect ratio NP types, to identify patterns of expression that might indicate high versus low NP toxicity. Three cell types representing the most common routes of human exposure to NPs, including macrophage-like (THP-1), small airway epithelial and intestinal (Caco-2/HT29-MTX) cells, were exposed to TiO2 nanobelts (TiO2-NB; high toxicity) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT; low toxicity) at low (10 µg/mL) and high (100 µg/mL) concentrations for 1 and 24 h. Unique patterns of gene and protein expressions were identified for each cell type, with no differentially expressed (p < 0.05, 1.5-fold change) genes or proteins overlapping across all three cell types. While unique to each cell type, the early response was primarily independent of NP type, showing similar expression patterns in response to both TiO2-NB and MWCNT. The early response might, therefore, indicate a general response to insult. In contrast, the 24 h response was unique to each NP type. The most significantly (p < 0.05) enriched biological processes in THP-1 cells indicated TiO2-NB regulation of pathways associated with inflammation, apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, DNA replication stress and genomic instability, while MWCNT-regulated pathways indicated increased cell proliferation, DNA repair and anti-apoptosis. These two distinct sets of biological pathways might, therefore, underlie cellular responses to high and low NP toxicity, respectively.
