A novel method for predicting antioxidant activity based on amino acid structure.

Electronic address: kim_oneill@byu.edu.AbstractEpidemiological studies show a positive correlation between oxidative stress and chronic disease development such as heart disease and cancer. While several antioxidant compounds with varying physical and chemical characteristics are able to reduce oxidative stress in biological systems, relatively few studies have been performed to examine the structural characteristics that produce potent antioxidants. We examined 20 essential and non-essential amino acids using the ORAC assay and used a simplest-case amino acid model to gather data to make predictions regarding the antioxidant activity of non-amino acid compounds; we also tested our findings on chalcone and nitrone data from the current literature. We observed that the sp(2)-hybridized carbons were the most consistent predictors of antioxidant activity in all groups. Valence electron to carbon ratio and length of conjugated double bond groups also emerged as important structural characteristics. Further testing may help to elucidate more accurate trends, as well as nonlinear relationships.

The Fe3O4/CNT composite modified anodes with various Fe3O4 contents were investigated to find the optimum ratio of the nanocomposite for the best MFC performance. The Fe3O4/CNT modified anodes produced much higher power densities than unmodified carbon anode and the 30wt% Fe3O4/CNT modified anode exhibited a maximum power density of 830mW/m(2). In the Fe3O4/CNT composite modified anode, Fe3O4 helps to attach the CNT on anode surface by its magnetic attraction and forms a multi layered network, whereas CNT offers a better nanostructure environment for bacterial growth and helps electron transfer from E.coli to electrode resulting in the increase in the current production with the catalytic activity of bacteria. The electrocatalytic behavior and all possible mechanism for their better performance are discussed in detail with the help of various structural and electrochemical techniques.

The oxidative stability of krill oil was assessed by peroxide value and anisidine value, measurement of lipid derived volatiles, lipid classes and antioxidants. The non-enzymatic browning reactions were assessed through the measurement of pyrroles, free amino acids content and Strecker-derived volatiles. The increase of incubation temperature firstly increased the lipid oxidation in krill oil and subsequently the non-enzymatic browning reactions. The occurrence of these reactions was most likely due to the reaction between α-dicarbonyl or carbonyl compounds with amino acids or ammonia. In addition to tocopherol and astaxanthin esters, the formation of pyrroles might help to protect the krill oil against lipid oxidation.

This paper studies in detail the shape of the level set function, delimiting a sub-domain in solid mechanics, with an innovative update method based on the computation of a displacement field obtained with the values of the level set function. A criterion based on the values of the level set function is proposed in order to assign the material properties. With the help of this criterion, an optimal approach is proposed, which predicts an accurate evolution of the sub-domain boundary. To validate this method, it was first applied in two dimensions to a through-thickness hole plate case, and then to the cases of brain tumour expansion and grasping to demonstrate the applicability of the method.
