- Risk assessment of β-cyfluthrin and imidacloprid in chickpea pods and leaves.
- Chahil GS1, Mandal K2, Sahoo SK1, Battu RS1, Singh B1.Author information 1Pesticide Residue Analysis Laboratory, Department of Entomology, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana 141004, Punjab, India.2Pesticide Residue Analysis Laboratory, Department of Entomology, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana 141004, Punjab, India. Electronic address: kousik11@gmail.com.AbstractDissipation of β-cyfluthrin and imidacloprid in chickpea pods and leaves was measured following three applications of Solomon 300 OD (β-cyfluthrin 9 percent +imidacloprid 21 percent) at 200 and 400mLha(-1). Residues of β-cyfluthrin on chickpea pods and leaves were found to be below its limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01mgkg(-1) after 7 days at both the dosages. Similarly, imidacloprid residues were found to be below its LOQ of 0.01mgkg(-1) at 10 days. Half-life periods on chickpea pods and leaves for β-cyfluthrin were found to be 1.06 and 0.58 days, whereas for imidacloprid these values were observed to be 2.07 and 1.75 days at recommended dose. As the theoretical maximum residue contributions on chickpea pods and leaves are found to be less than the maximum permissible intake values even on 0 day, therefore consumer health risks are minimal at both the dosages on chickpea.

- Bioaccessibility and safety assessment of trace elements from decoction of "Zhebawei" herbal medicines by in vitro digestion method.
- Zhou Y1, Gao X2, Wu C2, Wu Y2.Author information 1College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Shaoxing University, West of Ring Road 508, Shaoxing 312000, China. Electronic address: wszyb9132000@126.com.2College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Shaoxing University, West of Ring Road 508, Shaoxing 312000, China.AbstractStudies on in vitro bioaccessibility and safety assessment of 6 elements namely Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, As and Cd in decoction of eight commonly consumed "Zhebawei" herbal medicines were carried out. The method was based on simulation of human digestion in the gastrointestinal tract. Total content and content in extracts from gastrointestinal phases were analyzed for these elements by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES). In decoction of all 8 herbal medicines, it was found that the total content and bioaccessible concentration of these elements varied considerably among the types of herb, and the total content of each element did not show linearity with their bioaccessible content of the corresponding element. There is no risk of adverse health effects resulting from overdose of Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mn for almost all individuals by ingesting recommended maximum daily dose of these eight herbal medicines. In terms of Cd only Ophitopogin japonicum had higher total concentration and bioaccessible content than the value of suggested limit (5.4μg/d). For total As content, only Scrophularia ningpoensis and Corydalis yanhusuo did not meet the safety standard. However, regarding bioaccessible As contents, none of the eight herbal medicines exceeded the value of the daily permissible intake of As (0.12mg). The risk of toxicity from an element in herbal medicine might be overestimated when the total concentration but not the bioaccessible content is taken into account. In vitro digestion method is rapid, relatively simple and inexpensive, which could be helpful in conducting experiments about safety assessment of an element in herbal medicines.

- Measurements of radon gas concentrations in dwellings of Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah province in Saudi Arabia.
- Mohamed RI, Alfull ZZ, Dawood ND.Author information Department of Physics, Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt.AbstractIndoor radon concentration levels in a large number of dwellings in Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah Province have been measured. Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah is in the western region of Saudi Arabia. It is the second holiest city in Islam after Mecca, because it is the burial place of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad. The city was divided into four regions: western (contains nine sites), eastern (contains six sites), northern (contains nine sites) and southern (contains five sites). Radon gas concentration was measured using the closed chamber technique employing 2×2 cm(2) sheets of CR-39 solid-state nuclear track detectors. The detectors were kept for a period of 5 to 6 months from September 2010 to February 2011 in order to expose to radon gas. The results of the survey in the western and eastern sites showed that the overall minimum, maximum and average radon concentration levels were 20±1.6, 27±3.2 and 21±2.5 Bq m(-3), respectively. The lowest average radon concentration (20±1.6 Bq m(-3)) was found in Al Anabes and Al Suqya in the western region and Bani Dhafar in the eastern region, while the highest average concentration (27±3.2 Bq m(-3)) was found in Teeyba in the western region and Al 'Aridh in the eastern region, with an average of 21±2.5 Bq m(-3) in the western and eastern sites of Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah. Also in the northern region, the minimum radon concentration was 20±1.6 Bq m(-3) in Oyun, while the maximum was 42±1.6 Bq m(-3) in Sayyed al Shuhadd and Hai Nasr. In the southern region, the minimum radon concentration was 25±2.6 Bq m(-3) at Hai Al Hejrah, while the maximum value was 37±2.6 Bq m(-3) at Al Awali and Dawadia. The average radon concentration was 26±2.5 Bq m(-3) for Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah (western, eastern, northern and southern regions). The corresponding annual effective dose E (mSv y(-1)) to public from (222)Rn and its progeny was estimated to be 0.66 mSv y(-1) as an average value for Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah. The authors concluded that all the dwellings monitored for indoor radon concentration and annual effective dose show values within the permissible level and this is a blessing from God that this area, which many visitors come from all over the world (to visit the burial place of the Prophet Muhammad), is safe. Consequently, the health hazards related to radiation are expected to be negligible. Occupants of these dwellings are relatively safe.
