- Triple vessel disease is an extreme form of coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD develops when the major blood vessels supplying the heart become damaged or diseased. Plaque (cholesterol deposits) and inflammation are the two main causes of CAD.
- Of the first 600 patients to receive aortocoronary bypass grafts 383 had three diseased vessels, and of them 36 (9%) have died: 20 (5%) in hospital and 16 (4%) late. In 10 of those who died, ventricular function was normal, class I or class II and in the other 26 function was class III or class IV.
- Triple vessel disease refers to the presence of narrowing or blockages in all three of the major coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart. An article in the journal "Circulation" on the American Heart Association website states that these blockages occupy 50 percent or more of the diameter of the artery.
