- Assessment of (210)Po in Italian diet.
- Meli MA1, Desideri D2, Roselli C1, Feduzi L1.Author information 1Biomolecular Sciences Department, University of Urbino, P.zza Rinascimento 6, 61029 Urbino, Italy.2Biomolecular Sciences Department, University of Urbino, P.zza Rinascimento 6, 61029 Urbino, Italy. Electronic address: donatella.desideri@uniurb.it.AbstractThis research was dedicated to the study, in the Italian daily diet, of the background activity concentration of (210)Po, a radionuclide with a high radiotoxicity. (210)Po was determined by alpha spectrometry. For food products of vegetable origin, the (210)Po activity concentration follows the trend: leafy vegetable>flour>rice>fruits>pasta>other vegetables>fruit vegetable; for those of animal origin: eggs>cheese>milk. The (210)Po activity concentration was also compared with that found by the same authors in meat, sea food, water and beverages in a previous study. The committed effective doses to individuals of three population groups (infants, children and adults) were 379, 222 and 151μSvy(-1), respectively. The intake of foods of marine origin contributed about 67% of the total dose due to (210)Po ingestion. The effective dose, from (210)Po ingested by total diet, accounts for only 5-12% of the natural radiation exposure in Italy.

- A model of optimal dosing of antibiotic treatment in biofilm.
- Imran M1, Smith HL.Author information 1Department of Mathematics, Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering, Lahore University of Management Sciences, Lahore, Pakistan. mudassar.imran@lums.edu.pk.AbstractBiofilms are heterogeneous matrix enclosed micro-colonies of bacteria mostly found on moist surfaces. Biofilm formation is the primary cause of several persistent infections found in humans. We derive a mathematical model of biofilm and surrounding fluid dynamics to investigate the effect of a periodic dose of antibiotic on elimination of microbial population from biofilm. The growth rate of bacteria in biofilm is taken as Monod type for the limiting nutrient. The pharmacodynamics function is taken to be dependent both on limiting nutrient and antibiotic concentration. Assuming that flow rate of fluid compartment is large enough, we reduce the six dimensional model to a three dimensional model. Mathematically rigorous results are derived providing sufficient conditions for treatment success. Persistence theory is used to derive conditions under which the periodic solution for treatment failure is obtained. We also discuss the phenomenon of bi-stability where both infection-free state and infection state are locally stable when antibiotic dosing is marginal. In addition, we derive the optimal antibiotic application protocols for different scenarios using control theory and show that such treatments ensure bacteria elimination for a wide variety of cases. The results show that bacteria are successfully eliminated if the discrete treatment is given at an early stage in the infection or if the optimal protocol is adopted. Finally, we examine factors which if changed can result in treatment success of the previously treatment failure cases for the non-optimal technique.

- Frailty, financial resources and subjective well-being in later life.
- Hubbard RE1, Goodwin VA2, Llewellyn DJ3, Warmoth K2, Lang IA3.Author information 1Centre for Research in Geriatric Medicine, University of Queensland, Australia. Electronic address: r.hubbard1@uq.edu.au.2University of Exeter Medical School, Exeter, UK; National Institute for Health Research Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care for the South West Peninsula (NIHR PenCLAHRC), UK.3University of Exeter Medical School, Exeter, UK; National Institute for Health Research Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care for the South West Peninsula (NIHR PenCLAHRC), UK; M(2) Research Group, Exeter, UK.AbstractThough frailty status has recently been linked to poorer quality of life, the impact of income on this relationship has not previously been investigated. Data from a population-based panel study, the English Longitudinal Study of Aging, on 3225 participants aged 65-79 years were analyzed cross-sectionally. A Frailty Index (FI) was determined for each participant as a proportion of accumulated deficits and participants were categorized into four groups on the basis of their FI score: very fit (0.00-0.10), well (0.11-0.14), vulnerable (0.15-0.24), and frail (≥0.25). Subjective well-being was assessed using the CASP-19 instrument, and levels of financial resources quantified using a range of questions about assets and income from a range of sources. Linear regression models were used to assess the relationship between frailty and well-being. There was a significant negative correlation between frailty and well-being; the correlation coefficient between FI and CASP-19 scores was -0.58. The relationship was robust to adjustment for sex, age, and relevant health behaviors (smoking and physical activity) and persisted when participants with depressive symptoms were excluded from analysis. Those with greater financial resources reported better subjective well-being with evidence of a "dose-response" effect. The poorest participants in each frailty category had similar well-being to the most well-off with worse frailty status. Hence, while the association between frailty and poorer subjective well-being is not significantly impacted by higher levels of wealth and income, financial resources may provide a partial buffer against the detrimental psychological effects of frailty.
