- Histopathological features of canine spontaneous non-neoplastic gastric polyps - a retrospective study of 15 cases.
- Taulescu MA1, Valentine BA2, Amorim I3, Gärtner F3, Dumitraşcu DL4, Gal AF5, Sevastre B6, Catoi C5.Author information 1University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Pathology Department, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. taulescumarian@yahoo.com.2College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Biomedical Sciences, Oregon State University, Corvallis, USA.3Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS), University of Porto, Department of Pathology and Molecular Immunology, and Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto (IPATIMUP), Carcinogenesis, Porto, Portugal.4University of Medicine and Pharmacy, 2nd Medical Clinic, Cluj-Napoca, Romania.5University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Pathology Department, Cluj-Napoca, Romania.6University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Pathophysiology, Cluj-Napoca, Romania.AbstractFifteen cases of canine gastric polyps, collected over a 4-year period, were investigated using gross inspection, histological procedures and immunohistochemical techniques for Helicobacter infection. No breed or sex predisposition was found for gastric polyps, although they occurred mainly in elderly animals. There were 9 pedunculated and 6 sessile polypoid growths, between 5 to 30 mm in diameter developed mainly in the pyloric region of the stomach. The most common type of gastric polyps was the hyperplastic one. The inflammatory type was identified in three cases. Foci of AB/PAS Goblet positive cells resembling intestinal metaplasia, mild dysplasia of gastric epithelium, well delimited calcified areas, islands of osteoid matrix and nematodes were present in some of these lesions. Histological examination of the adjacent gastric polyp (surrounding gastric mucosa) revealed a severe chronic inflammation in 13 cases and a high grade of Helicobacter species colonization in all cases, but Kendall test analysis showed no correlation between Helicobacter spp. colonization degree and gastritis scores (τ = 0289; p = 0.204). A significant correlation was found between Helicobacter spp. location and gastritis scores (τ = 0.497; p = 0.035). Immunohistochemistry performed with a polyclonal antibody confirmed Helicobacter spp. infection in all cases. Based on their morphology, Helicobacter pylori - like organisms were described in 3 of 15 cases. No high degree of dysplasia nor neoplasia were identified in these lesions. The etiology and pathogenesis of gastric polyps in dogs are still unknown, although a severe chronic antral gastritis may be a predisposing condition for development of gastric polyps in dogs.

- Expression of claudins in the normal canine gastric mucosa.
- Psáder R1, Jakab C2, Máthé A1, Balka G2, Pápa K1, Sterczer A1.Author information 1Szent István University Department and Clinic of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Science István u. 2 Budapest H-1078 Hungary.2Szent István University Department of Pathology and Forensic Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Science Budapest Hungary.AbstractThe aim of the present study was to investigate the expression pattern of claudin-1, -2, -3, -4, -5, -7, -8, -10 and -18 in the intact fundic and pyloric gastric mucosa of dogs. Intense, linear, membranous claudin-18 positivity was detected in the surface gastric cells and in the epithelial cells of the gastric glands both in the fundic and pyloric stomach regions. The mucous neck cells in the apical part of the glands, furthermore the parietal cells and chief cells of the basal part of the gland were all positive for claudin-18, in the same way as the enteroendocrine cells. Cells of the basal part of the pyloric glands showed intense, linear, membranous claudin-2 positivity, but cells of the superficial portion of these glands and the surface gastric cells in this region were claudin-2 negative. Fibroblasts, endothelial cells, lymphocytes of the propria layer, smooth muscle cells and vegetative neurons were all negative for claudin-2. All gastric epithelial cells were negative for claudin-1, -3, -4, -5, -6, -7, -8 and -10. The endothelial cells of the propria layer had intense claudin-5 positivity. We assume that claudin-18 forms a paracellular barrier against gastric acid in the healthy canine stomach, in the same way as in mice.

- Effect of dietary inclusion of whole ear corn silage on stomach development and gastric mucosa integrity of heavy pigs at slaughter.
- Mason F, Pascotto E, Zanfi C, Spanghero M.Author information Department of Agricultural and Environmental Science, University of Udine, 33100 Udine, Italy.AbstractThe effect of dietary inclusion of whole ear corn silage on stomach development and on the incidence of gastric lesions was studied in heavy pigs. Three groups of 14 castrated male pigs were fed a control cereal-based diet and two diets containing whole ear corn silage (15% or 30% DM) from 90 kg bodyweight to slaughter at 170 kg. The diets with whole ear corn silage increased the amount of neutral detergent fibre in the stomach contents, the weight of the organs and the area of the pyloric region. Follicular gastritis was significantly lower and gastritis less severe in pigs fed the whole ear corn silage diets than pigs fed the control diet. The inclusion of whole ear corn silage in the diet influenced the development of the stomach and reduced the incidence of gastritis in heavy pigs.
