The aim was to investigate the influence of serum on the induction of micronuclei (MN) by nanoparticles (NPs) of different sizes. Therefore, A549 human lung carcinoma cells and amorphous monodisperse silica nanoparticles (SNPs) were used as models. Assessment of the cell viability, cell cycle changes and induction of MN by SNPs ranging from 12 to 174 nm was performed in presence or absence of serum, applying the in vitro flow cytometry-based MN assay. Here, it has been demonstrated that serum has an influence on these end points, with a lower cell viability in absence of serum compared with the presence of serum. Further, cell cycle changes, specifically, G1 and S-phase arrest, were observed in absence of serum for four out of six SNPs tested. A size-dependent MN induction was observed: larger SNPs being more active in absence of serum. In addition, the serum influence was characterised by a size-dependency for cytotoxic and genotoxic effects, with a higher influence of serum for smaller particles. The data indicate that the in vitro micronucleus assay in presence and absence of serum could be advised for hazard assessment because it demonstrates a higher sensitivity in serum-free conditions than in conditions with serum. However, this recommendation applies only if the cell line used is able to proliferate under serum-free conditions because cell division is a prerequisite for MN expression.

The advantages of limiting localized edema must be weighed against corticosteroids' disadvantageous inhibition of the normal growth factor profile production that is essential for would healing. A single-center prospective, randomized, controlled, single-blind study of 57 patients undergoing hair restoration surgery (HRS) by one of three different surgeons revealed: 1) no dehiscence along the donor wound; 2) no statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) in wound edge apposition noted between patients receiving or not receiving intralesional corticosteroids at any of the four measured scalp regions and 3) a non-statistically significant trend emerged suggesting the benefit of corticosteroid at the temples (points of decreased donor closing tension) versus its potential hindrance along the mastoids (points of increased tension). These results suggest that peri-incisional triamcinolone acetonide (PITMC) does not have a statistically significant effect on donor wound edge apposition within 8-10 days of HRS. A subtle, though not statistically significant, trend emerged demonstrating the benefit of PITMC with respect to early phase donor wound edge apposition in areas of least donor closing tension and the hindrance of PITMC in regions of increased tension.

This rapid simple and effective extraction method was based on matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD). The best results were obtained using C18 as dispersant sorbent. The correlation coefficient (r) with each matrix-matched calibration curve is higher than 0.999 at the range of 0.05-0.8μg/kg for CAP and FF, 0.1-1.6μg/kg for FFA and TAP. CCα and CCβ of the fenicols upon the method were ranged from 0.01 to 0.09μg/kg and 0.04 to 0.25μg/kg respectively. In the fortified levels recoveries of the four compounds ranged from 83.8% to 98.8% with RSDs lower than 13.7%. The proposed method has been applied successfully to the analysis of CAP, TAP, FF and FFA in shrimp and fish samples, which demonstrates that this method is fast, sensitive, reliable and environmental friendly.
