- Efficacy and safety of sclerotherapy for digital mucous cysts.
- Sung JY, Roh MR.Author information Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Research Institute, Yonsei University College of Medicine , Seoul , Korea.AbstractBackground: Digital mucous cysts (DMCs) are common tumor of the adjacent distal interphalangeal joint that causes leakage of mucinous material from the joint. There are various treatment modalities for DMCs, among which sclerotherapy has been reported as an effective alternative treatment. Objectives: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of sclerotherapy for DMC. Patients and methods: We retrospectively reviewed 12 patients with DMC treated with sclerotherapy. 0.5% Sodium tetradecyl sulfate 0.2-0.3cc was injected into the pseudocystic lesions after the complete evacuation of mucinous material. Results: Eleven of 12 lesions regressed successfully, including four lesions that resolved after a single treatment. The mean number of treatments was 2.4. The mean follow-up period was 18.3 months after the last treatment. There was one case of recurrence after the last treatment. Complications such as mild edema, inflammation and pain were noted in three patients, which resolved within few days. Conclusions: According to the results of the present study, sclerotherapy is a feasible alternative treatment modality for DMCs. Treatment was well tolerated with few side effects, and resulted in high cure rate. Due to its less invasive nature, high accessibility and favorable outcomes, sclerotherapy should be considered a satisfactory option for the treatment of DMC.

- Comparison of intradermal injection with iontophoresis of abobotulinum toxin A for the treatment of primary axillary hyperhidrosis: A randomized, controlled trial.
- Montaser-Kouhsari L, Zartab H, Fanian F, Noorian N, Sadr B, Nassiri-Kashani M, Firooz A.Author information Center for Research and Training in Skin Diseases and Leprosy, Tehran University of Medical Sciences , Tehran , Iran.AbstractBackground: Botulinum neurotoxin type A (BTX-A) injection is the treatment of choice for idiopathic axillary hyperhidrosis (IAH) refractory to conventional treatments. Objective: This study compared the efficacy of BTX-A injection and iontophoresis for treatment of IAH in a randomized controlled trial. Methods: In eleven patients with the diagnosis of IAH, one axilla was randomly treated with injections of 1.5 mL (250 MU) of BTX-A, and the other side was treated with BTX-A administered by iontophoresis. The amount of sweating, skin hydration, transepidermal water loss, pain, and patient satisfaction on both axilla were compared with baseline levels, and also between both sides 1 week, 1 month, and 6 months after treatment. Results: The injection side had significantly less sweat production than the iontophoresis side 1 week, 1 month, and 6 months after treatment (84%, 76%, and 50% vs. 73%, 22%, and 32%, respectively). The response to iontophoresis was more stable than that to injection. Participants' pain perception during the procedure score was significantly less on the iontophoresis side compared with the injection side (15.0 vs. 20.0, p < 0.05). Conclusion: This study has shown that injection is a more effective method for the administration of BTX-A, though iontophoresis can also be considered a non-invasive and painless method in some patients.

- Functional brain fluorescence plurimetry in rat by implantable concatenated CMOS imaging system.
- Kobayashi T, Masuda H, Kitsumoto C, Haruta M, Motoyama M, Ohta Y, Noda T, Sasagawa K, Tokuda T, Shiosaka S, Ohta J.Author information Division of Molecular Brain Science, Research Institute of Traditional Asian Medicine, Kinki University, Osaka-Sayama, Osaka 589 8511, Japan. Electronic address: yaemugura@gmail.com.AbstractMeasurement of brain activity in multiple areas simultaneously by minimally invasive methods contributes to the study of neuroscience and development of brain machine interfaces. However, this requires compact wearable instruments that do not inhibit natural movements. Application of optical potentiometry with voltage-sensitive fluorescent dye using an implantable image sensor is also useful. However, the increasing number of leads required for the multiple wired sensors to measure larger domains inhibits natural behavior. For imaging broad areas by numerous sensors without excessive wiring, a web-like sensor that can wrap the brain was developed. Kaleidoscopic potentiometry is possible using the imaging system with concatenated sensors by changing the alignment of the sensors. This paper describes organization of the system, evaluation of the system by a fluorescence imaging, and finally, functional brain fluorescence plurimetry by the sensor. The recorded data in rat somatosensory cortex using the developed multiple-area imaging system compared well with electrophysiology results.
