Vaginal discharge is a term given to biological fluids contained within or expelled from the vagina. It can be of various colors, usually whitish, yellowish or greenish.
While most discharge is normal and can reflect the various stages of the menstrual cycle, some discharge can be a result of an infection, such as a sexually transmitted disease.

- Risk factors of the vertical transmission of human papilloma virus in newborns from singleton pregnancy - preliminary report.
- Skoczyński M, Goździcka-Józefiak A, Kwaśniewska A.Author information Department of Obstetrics and Pathology of Pregnancy, Medical University of Lublin , Lublin , Poland and.AbstractAbstract Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between the frequency of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) isolation in pregnant women and their offspring, and to assess the risk of maternal-neonatal transmission. Study design: The study included vaginal/buccal smears of 135 pregnant women, as well as the buccal smears and the respiratory discharge samples from their neonates. The material was tested for the presence of HPV DNA by means of PCR. Results: Twenty-two HPV 11-positive cases (16.3%) were detected amongst pregnant women, along with 16 neonatal HPV 11-positive cases (11.85%). The concordance rate of maternal and neonatal HPV 11 DNA was 54.5%. Three maternal variables: the presence of HPV 11, less than 10 years of education, and common law proved significant risk factors for vertical transmission. Conclusion: Asymptomatic HPV infection of a pregnant woman rather than the mode of delivery or other obstetrical characteristics constitutes significant risk factor of vertical transmission.

- Feasibility and results of at-home follow-up after early postpartum discharge from maternity units in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso.

Method: This prospective descriptive study took place during a one month period (April 1-30, 2011) in five maternity units in Bobo-Dioulasso, the second largest city in Burkina Faso. Mothers with normal vaginal deliveries and no complications at the sixth hour postpartum were included in the study with their newborns after informed oral consent. The discharge took place between 12 and 48 hours after delivery. The follow-up took place by telephone, home visits, and emergency hospital visits in cases of complications. A postnatal hospital visit was systematically planned for day 7. Results: The study included 630 mothers and their babies. There were 1567 phone calls made: 27 women could not be reached by telephone after discharge, and 140 home visits took place, either at the mother's request or because of the failure to reach her by telephone. Complications were observed in 55 mothers and 135 babies. Conclusion: Postnatal follow-up at home is required for mothers and their newborns discharged early from the maternity ward after normal childbirth in view of the possibility of complications. This ensures continuity of care to improve survival of mothers and babies. As cell phones become more and more available, they may play an important role as a tool for such follow up.
