Self-nanoemulsifying performance of two grades of Lauroglycol (Lauroglycol-90 and Lauroglycol-FCC) in the presence of mixed nonionic surfactants.

Box 2460, Riyadh 11451 , Saudi Arabia .AbstractThe present study was undertaken to evaluate the impact of various combinations of nonionic surfactants on self-nanoemulsifying performance of two grades of Lauroglycol (Lauroglycol-90 and Lauroglycol-FCC) in glibenclamide (GBN) nanoemulsion. Formulations (L1-L30) were prepared by spontaneous emulsification method. Prepared formulations were subjected to thermodynamic stability and self-nanoemulsification test. Results of thermodynamic stability and self-nanoemulsification tests were confirmed by further characterization of these formulations in terms of droplet size, viscosity, refractive index and % transmittance. Formulations prepared with Labrasol, HCO-60 and Gelucire-44/14 were found to be suitable for self-emulsifying drug delivery system only whereas those prepared with Tween-80 and Cremophor-EL were found to be suitable for self-nanoemulsifying or self-microemulsifying drug delivery system of GBN with respect to Lauroglycol-90 or Lauroglycol-FCC. Formulation L24 (Lauroglycol-FCC/Tween-80/ethanol/water) was optimized as best formulation for self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system of GBN. These results indicated that Tween-80 could be the best surfactant in terms of self-nanoemulsification.

The plants were watered daily with tap water. Plants were cultivated in natural environment in mid of March (2011). A direct relation between root length and water contents suggests a defense mechanism of MP (microrihzal plants) against the fungal stress. It was also supported by the fact that the leaf area of MP was much greater as compared to the NMP (non microrihzal plants) with elevated concentration of all chlorophyllus pigments in 30 days. An increase in the surface area of the leaf and concentration of the pigments, may be for an acceleration in absorption of CO₂ for reduction of it into glucose through oxidation of water molecule. The non-significant decline in glucose contents support the above hypothesis of rapid redox reaction mechanism which was established to overcome the stress. The positive effects of mycorrhizal which were already mentioned in the literature were reported in this article in relations of survival strategies of the plant, adapted in stress conditions. An increase in the chlorophyll contents (30 d) and leaf area of plants possibly attributed with absorption of solar radiation for the protection of plants. It was also supported by the higher concentration of carotenoids (30 d) that may have an additional function of regulation of certain developmental responses and screening of light to save the plants from stress conditions.

Use of health and social care services in a cohort of Italian dementia patients.

Scalmana S, Di Napoli A, Franco F, Vanacore N, Di Lallo D, Giarrizzo ML, Guasticchi G.AbstractThe aim of this study, conducted in the Region of Lazio, Italy, in 2008-2010, was to describe the use, over a one-year period, of health and social care services in a cohort of 712 patients with a diagnosis of dementia. These patients had never previously used such services. We evaluated the association between the patients' sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and their use of services. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected at baseline using validated instruments, while the use of services was investigated at the end of the one-year follow-up through a structured (questionnaire-based) interview with the caregiver. We found that 11.9% of patients used health or social care services. The most frequent diagnoses were: Alzheimer's disease (72.1%), mixed dementia (20.5%), and vascular dementia (9.7%). A higher probability of use of services was observed in patients with: more than five years of schooling (OR=1.79; 95%CI:1.08-2.96); one or more comorbidity (OR=4.87; 95%CI:2.05- 11.57); severe (OR=4.78; 95%CI:1.75-13.06) or moderate dementia (OR=2.08; 95%CI:0.98-4.40). The low health and social care service use among dementia patients in this study could be explained by a lack of availability of services. Public health authorities should plan adequate networks of services, considering both patients and caregivers' needs.
