Anatomical terms of neuroanatomy |
The medial pectoral nerve (medial anterior thoracic) arises from the medial cord (sometimes directly from the anterior division of the inferior trunk) of the brachial plexus and through it from the eighth cervical and first thoracic roots.
It passes behind the first part of the axillary artery, curves forward between the axillary artery and vein, and unites in front of the artery with a filament from the lateral nerve.
It then enters the deep surface of the pectoralis minor muscle, where it divides into a number of branches, which supply the muscle.
Two or three branches pierce the muscle and end in the sternocostal head of the pectoralis major muscle. A mnemonic to differentiate the medial pectoral nerve, which pierces both the pectoralis minor and the sternocostal head of the pectoralis major, from the lateral pectoral nerve, which pierces only the clavicular head of the pectoralis major, is "Lateral Less, Medial More".

- Multiple unilateral variations in medial and lateral cords of brachial plexus and their branches.
- Goel S, Rustagi SM, Kumar A, Mehta V, Suri RK.Author information Department of Anatomy, Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, Delhi, India.AbstractDuring routine dissection of the upper extremity of an adult male cadaver, multiple variations in branches of medial and lateral cords of brachial plexus were encountered. Three unique findings were observed. First, intercordal neural communications between the lateral and medial cords were observed. Second, two lateral pectoral nerves and one medial pectoral nerve were seen to arise from the lateral and medial cord respectively. The musculocutaneous nerve did not pierce the coracobrachialis. Finally, the ulnar nerve arose by two roots from the medial cord. Knowledge of such variations is of interest to anatomists, radiologists, neurologists, anesthesiologists, and surgeons. The aim of our study is to provide additional information about abnormal brachial plexus and its clinical implications.

Possibility of variations in the origin, course and distribution of branches of brachial plexus must be kept in mind during anesthetizing the brachial plexus, mastectomy and plastic surgery procedures. In the current case, the medial pectoral nerve arose directly from the middle trunk of the brachial plexus and the lateral pectoral nerve arose from the anterior division of the upper trunk of the brachial plexus. The lateral pectoral nerve supplied the pectoralis major and the medial pectoral nerve supplied pectoralis major and pectoralis minor muscles through two separate branches.

- Medial pectoral pedicle is a reliable landmark for axillary lymph node dissection.
- Aripin YM1, Ibrahim N, Muhammad R.Author information 1Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Malaysia. Electronic address: mayahya3@yahoo.com.AbstractBACKGROUND: The anatomical orientation of structures in the axilla has not been well studied, although it is essential for a neat and safe dissection. The objective of this study was to determine the relations between neurovascular structures in the axilla as they were encountered during axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) for breast cancer.
