A precancerous condition (or premalignant condition) is a generalized state associated with a significantly increased risk of cancer. If left untreated, these conditions may lead to cancer.
Premalignant lesion is a morphologically altered tissue in which cancer is more likely to occur than its apparently normal counterpart.
Examples of pre-malignant conditions include actinic keratosis,[1] Barrett's esophagus, atrophic gastritis, and cervical dysplasia.
The term was coined in 1875 by Romanian physician Victor Babeş.

- Diagnostic aids for detection of oral precancerous conditions.
- Messadi DV.AbstractOral cancer has a tendency to be detected at late stage which is detrimental to the patients because of its high mortality and morbidity rates. Early detection of oral cancer is therefore important to reduce the burden of this devastating disease. In this review article, the most common oral precancerous lesions are discussed and the importance of early diagnosis is emphasized. In addition, the most common non-invasive oral cancer devices that can aid the general practitioners in early diagnosis are also discussed.International Journal of Oral Science (2013) 5, doi:10.1038/ijos.2013.24; published online 7 June 2013.
