- 13²,17³-Cyclopheophorbide b enol as a catabolite of chlorophyll b in phycophagy by protists.
- Kashiyama Y1, Yokoyama A, Shiratori T, Inouye I, Kinoshita Y, Mizoguchi T, Tamiaki H.Author information 1Graduate School of Life Sciences, Ritsumeikan University, Kusatsu, Shiga 525-8577, Japan. chiro@fukui-ut.ac.jpAbstractBoth 13(2),17(3)-cyclopheophorbide a and b enols were produced along with ingestion of green microalgae containing chlorophylls a and b by a centrohelid protist (phycophagy). The results suggest that chlorophyll b as well as chlorophyll a were directly degraded to colored yet non-phototoxic catabolites in the protistan phycophagic process. Such a simple process by the predators makes a contrast to the much sophisticated chlorophyll degradation process of land plants and some algae, where phototoxicity of chlorophylls was cancelled through the multiple enzymatic steps resulting in colorless and non-phototoxic catabolites.

- 3-(Oxazolo[4,5-b]pyridin-2-yl)anilides as a novel class of potent inhibitors for the kinetoplastid Trypanosoma brucei, the causative agent for human African trypanosomiasis.
- Ferrins L1, Rahmani R, Sykes ML, Jones AJ, Avery VM, Teston E, Almohaywi B, Yin J, Smith J, Hyland C, White KL, Ryan E, Campbell M, Charman SA, Kaiser M, Baell JB.Author information 1Medicinal Chemistry, Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University, Parkville, Victoria 3052, Australia.AbstractA whole organism high-throughput screen of approximately 87,000 compounds against Trypanosoma brucei brucei led to the recent discovery of several novel compound classes with low micromolar activity against this organism and without appreciable cytotoxicity to mammalian cells. Herein we report a structure-activity relationship (SAR) investigation around one of these hit classes, the 3-(oxazolo[4,5-b]pyridin-2-yl)anilides. Sharp SAR is revealed, with our most active compound (5) exhibiting an IC₅₀ of 91 nM against the human pathogenic strain T.b. rhodesiense and being more than 700 times less toxic towards the L6 mammalian cell line. Physicochemical properties are attractive for many compounds in this series. For the most potent representatives, we show that solubility and metabolic stability are key parameters to target during future optimisation.
