機械によって挟まれたり，階段で将棋倒しになったり，土砂に埋まったりして胸部を強く圧迫されることで発症する。声門閉鎖の状態で胸郭に大きな外力が加わった場合，気道内圧の上昇とともに血管内圧も上昇する。大静脈・頸静脈系は逆流防止の弁がないため，胸部圧迫により上大静脈圧が上昇し，顔面や頸部を中心に紫紅色の腫脹と多数の溢血斑が出現する。同時に脳循環も障害されて意識障害をきたす。予後は低酸素血症と脳障害の程度により規定される。 (引用：http://www.jaam.jp/html/dictionary/dictionary/word/0319.htm)
