- 睡眠は持続的な意識消失と全般的な身体機能の低下状態を伴っている。
- 睡眠にはサーカディアンリズムに従い身体を睡眠状態に導く仕組みと覚醒状態を維持する仕組みが関わっている。
- 夜になるとメラトニンがメラトニン受容体に作用し、身体を活動から急速状態に切り替えることで自然な睡眠を導いている。
- 覚醒状態を保つ仕組みとして、オレキシンという脳内物質がオレキシン受容体に作用することで脳を活動状態に維持している。
- 睡眠時間は新生児は1日約16時間眠り、レム睡眠が睡眠時間の50%以上を占める。
- 生後4ヶ月になるとレム睡眠児間は40%以下になり、レム睡眠量は40%以下となる。
- 睡眠時間は高齢者では短くなり、昼の睡眠が見られるようになる。
