- Abstract. Peri-tumoral edema in intracranial meningiomas occurs frequently and obviously impacts the morbidity and mortality of these predominantly benign neoplasms. Several causative factors (age, gender, volume, location…) have been unsuccessfully investigated.
- The edema surrounding brain tumors results from leakage of plasma across the vessel wall into the parenchyma secondary to disruption of the blood–brain barrier. The clinical signs of brain tumor edema depend on the location of the tumor as well as the extent of the edema, which often exceeds the mass effect induced by the tumor itself.
- Extent of brain edema independently correlates with prognosis in patients operated for single BM. In conclusion, patients with small peritumoral edema have shorter survival times and their tumors are characterized by a more brain-invasive growth, lower HIF1a expression and less angiogenic activity.
