開腹して胃瘻を造設したり、内視鏡的に胃瘻を造設したりする。
内視鏡的に胃瘻を造設する場合、プル・プッシュ法とイントロデューサー法に分けられる。前者は造設用胃瘻カテーテルを口腔・咽頭を通過させ、胃内腔から腹壁外への経路にて造設する方法であり、後者は造設用胃瘻カテーテルを口腔・咽頭を通過させず、腹壁外から胃内腔への経路にて造設する方法である。
