- Gum kondagogu reduced/stabilized silver nanoparticles as direct colorimetric sensor for the sensitive detection of Hg(2+) in aqueous system.
- Rastogi L, Sashidhar RB, Karunasagar D, Arunachalam J.Author information National Centre for Compositional Characterization of Materials, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, ECIL-Post, Hyderabad 500062, A.P., India.AbstractA highly sensitive and selective method is reported for the colorimetric detection of Hg(2+) in aqueous system by using label free silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). Ag NPs used in this method were synthesized by gum kondagogu (GK) which acted as both reducing and stabilizing agent. The average size of the GK-Ag NPs was found to be 5.0±2.8nm as revealed by transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis and the nanoparticles were stable at various pH conditions (pH 4-11) and salt concentrations (5-100mM). The GK reduced/stabilized Ag NPs (GK-Ag NPs) were directly used for the selective colorimetric reaction with Hg(2+) without any further modification. The bright yellow colour of Ag NPs was found to fade in a concentration dependent manner with the added Hg(+) ions. The fading response was directly correlated with increasing concentration of Hg(2+). More importantly, this response was found to be highly selective for Hg(2+) as the absorption spectra were found to be unaffected by the presence of other ions like; Na(+), K(+), Mg(2+), Ca(2+), Cu(2+), Ni(2+), Co(2+), As(3+), Fe(2+), Cd(2+), etc. The metal sensing mechanism is explained based on the turbidometric and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of GK-Ag NPs with Hg(2+). The proposed method was successfully applied for the determination of Hg(2+) in various ground water samples. The reported method can be effectively used for the quantification of total Hg(2+) in samples, wherein the organic mercury is first oxidized to inorganic form by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The limit of quantification for Hg(2+) using the proposed method was as low as 4.9×10(-8)molL(-1) (50nM). The proposed method has potential application for on-field qualitative detection of Hg(2+) in aqueous environmental samples.

- Elman C, Wray LA, Xi J.Author information Department of Sociology, The University of Akron, Akron, OH 44325-1905, United States. Electronic address: Cheryl2@uakron.edu.AbstractRecent studies find lasting effects of poor youth health on educational attainment but use young samples and narrow life course windows of observation to explore outcomes. We apply a life course framework to three sets of Health and Retirement Study birth cohorts to examine early health status effects on education and skills attainment measured late in life. The older cohorts that we study were the earliest recipients of U.S. policies promoting continuing education through the GI Bill, community college expansions and new credentials such as the GED. We examine a wide range of outcomes but focus on GEDs, postsecondary school entry and adult human capital as job-related training. We find that older U.S. cohorts had considerable exposure to these forms of attainment and that the effects of youth health on them vary by outcome: health selection and ascription group effects are weak or fade, respectively, in outcomes associated with delayed or adult attainment. However, poorer health and social disadvantage in youth and barriers associated with ascription carry forward to limit attainment of key credentials such as diplomas and college degrees. We find that the human capital - health gradient is dynamic and that narrow windows of observation in existing studies miss much of it. National context also matters for studying health-education linkages over the life course.

- An unusual case of transient neonatal pustular melanosis: a diagnostic puzzle.
- Brazzelli V, Grasso V, Croci G, Figar T, Borroni G.Author information Department of Clinical-Surgical, Diagnostic and Paediatric Sciences, Institute of Dermatology, Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo, University of Pavia, Pavia, Italy, vbrazzelli@libero.it.AbstractA newborn's skin may exhibit a variety of changes during the first weeks of life, and rashes are extremely common in the neonatal period, representing a significant source of parental concern. In particular, a variety of skin eruptions can present as pustules. Most of them are innocuous and self-limiting, while others can be the manifestation of an infectious disease or even indicative of serious underlying disorders. Transient neonatal pustular melanosis is an uncommon vesiculopustular rash characterized by small pustules on a non-erythematous base, noted at birth or during the first day of life, without systemic symptoms. The lesions rupture spontaneously, leaving hyperpigmented macules that usually fade within few weeks. Clinical recognition of this disease can help physicians avoid unnecessary diagnostic testing and treatment for infectious etiologies because no specific therapy is recommended. The clinical aspect and time of onset are generally sufficient to make the correct diagnosis. Nevertheless, peculiar clinical presentations may require additional work-up to rule out life-threatening conditions, and dermatological consultation and histological examination are required for the final diagnosis. Conclusion: We report an exceedingly unusual presentation of transient neonatal pustular melanosis, suggesting the importance of a systematic diagnostic approach to allow a confident recognition of this benign condition.

- Effects of Iodine on the Relaxation Dynamics of a Photoexcited I-(H2O)4 Cluster.
- Sheu WS, Chiou MF.Author information Department of Chemistry, Fu-Jen Catholic University , Xinzhuang, New Taipei City 24205, Taiwan, ROC.AbstractThe Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics are used to examine the relaxation dynamics of the charge-transfer-to-solvent (CTTS) photoexcited electron in I-(H2O)4. The dynamics are initiated from the C1' cluster configuration, which contains a dangling water molecule. The iodine atom is found to exert a repulsive force on the photoexcited electron at the beginning but an attractive force at later times of the simulation. This dual repulsion-and-attraction role of the iodine atom is found to be dependent on the ratio of the iodine-electron distance to the radius of gyration of the excited electron, d/r. In the region of d/r < ∼0.8, the iodine exerts an exclusion-repulsion force on the excited electron. Conversely, for values of d/r > ∼1.0, the iodine can exert an attractive force on the excited electron due to the induced dipole moment of iodine. However, at large iodine-electron distances, the iodine-electron interaction becomes very weak, and as a result, this attractive force is expected to fade away. Due to the heavy mass of the iodine atom, the evolution of the iodine-electron distance is driven by the motion of solvent molecules and not iodine itself. The dangling water molecules and the dipolar field of water molecules are also important in the solvent dynamics. The influence of temperature on the iodine effects and the experimental implications of the findings are also discussed.
