- Dehydrocostus lactone prevents mitochondrial dysfunction in osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells.
- Choi EM.AbstractThe dried root of Saussurea lappa Clarke (Compositae) has been used as a traditional medicine. Dehydrocostus lactone is one of the main bioactive constituents of this medicinal plant. In the present study, the protective effect of dehydrocostus lactone against antimycin A (an inhibitor of mitochondrial complex III)-induced cytotoxicity was investigated in osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells. Pre-treatment with dehydrocostus lactone prior to antimycin A exposure significantly prevented mitochondrial membrane potential dissipation, complex IV inactivation, ATP loss, cytochrome c release, intracellular calcium elevation and potassium loss, and reactive oxygen species production induced by antimycin A. These results suggest that dehydrocostus lactone protects osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells from antimycin A-induced cell damage through the improved mitochondrial function.

- Bone metastases are usually treated by surgical removal, fixation and chemotherapeutic treatment. Bone cement is used to fill the resection voids. The aim of this study was to develop a local drug delivery system using a calcium phosphate cement (CPC) as carrier for chemotherapeutic agents. CPC cons

- Assessing the roles of presynaptic ryanodine receptors and adenosine receptors in caffeine-induced enhancement of hippocampal mossy fiber transmission
- Sato Ikuma,Kamiya Haruyuki
- Neuroscience Research 71(2), 183-187, 2011-10
- … Caffeine robustly enhances transmitter release from the hippocampal mossy fiber terminals, although it remains uncertain whether calcium mobilization through presynaptic ryanodine receptors mediates this enhancement. … This result suggests that caffeine enhances mossy fiber synaptic transmission by two distinct presynaptic mechanisms, i.e., removal of A1 receptor-mediated tonic inhibition and ryanodine receptor-mediated calcium release from intracellular stores. …

- Ca(2+)-dependent binding of calcium-binding protein 1 to presynaptic group III metabotropic glutamate receptors and blockage by phosphorylation of the receptors.
- Nakajima Yoshiaki
- Biochemical and biophysical research communications 412(4), 602-605, 2011-09-09
- … Presynaptic group III metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) and Ca(2+) channels are the main neuronal activity-dependent regulators of synaptic vesicle release, and they use common molecules in their signaling cascades. … Because the mGluRs and Ca(2+) channels reciprocally regulate each other and functionally converge on the regulation of synaptic vesicle release, the mGluRs would be expected to utilize more EF-hand Ca(2+)-binding proteins in their signaling. …
