- 1958年にメイディン(Madin SH)とダービー(Darby NB)により樹立されたコッカースパニエル犬の腎から樹立された細胞系である。
- 生理学研究の為に使われていたが、インフルエンザウイルスの培養細胞株としても用いられる。
- この細胞は上皮様形態をもち、シャーレ上に培養すると一層に増殖し、一部がドーム形成を示す。
- ホルモンの感受性はバソプレシン、オキシトシン、グルカゴン、プロスタグランジン、エピネフリンに対してcAMPの増加を引き起こすことが報告されている。
- ヘンレの太い上行脚から集合尿細管にかけての遠位尿細管の性質を主に有するが、一部アルカリホスファターゼ活性など近位尿細管の性質ももつ。
