- Overactive neurogenic bladder is a common problem in people who have multiple sclerosis (MS) and in those with spinal cord injury (SCI). Treatment for neurogenic overactive bladder has improved in recent decades with corresponding reductions in mortality.
- Neurogenic overactive bladder (OAB) is characterized by urinary urgency usually accompanied by urinary frequency. Urgency urinary incontinence may or may not be present. The term neurogenic OAB should be reserved for patients with a neurologic injury or disease state that leads to OAB symptoms.
- Neurogenic bladder may present in one of the following two ways: (1) specific bladder dysfunction in which the neurological lesions are above sacral nerves S2 through S4 or (2) flaccid bladder dysfunction in which the lesions are below sacral nerves S2 through S4. Physical trauma to the spinal cord is a frequent cause of neurogenic bladder.
