Hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy (or Bamberger-Marie syndrome)[1] is a medical condition combining clubbing and periostitis of the long bones of the upper and lower extremities. Distal expansion of the long bones as well as painful, swollen joints[2] and synovial villous proliferation are often seen. The condition may occur alone (primary), or it may be secondary to diseases like lung cancer. It is especially associated with pulmonary adenocarcinoma and all 3 types of non-small cell lung carcinoma. These patients often get clubbing and increased bone deposition on long bones. Their presenting symptoms are sometimes only clubbing and painful ankles.
It is also known as "osteoarthropathia hypertrophicans".[3]
Eponym[edit]
It is named for Eugen von Bamberger and Pierre Marie.[4][5][6]

- BACKGROUND: Digital clubbing and hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HOA) form a diagnostic challenge. Subtle presentations of clubbing are often missed. The underlying pathophysiology remains unclear. Establishing a differential diagnosis based on nonspecific signs can be cumbersome. Finally, the progno
