- Generation of transgenic medaka expressing claudin7-EGFP for imaging of tight junctions in living medaka embryos.
- Miyamoto T1, Momoi A, Kato K, Kondoh H, Tsukita S, Furuse M, Furutani-Seiki M.Author information 1Department of Cell Biology, Faculty of Medicine, Kyoto University, Kyoto 606-8501, Japan. t-miyamoto@hiroshima-u.ac.jpAbstractThe tight junction (TJ) is a specialized cell-cell adhesion structure in epithelial and endothelial sheets unique to the chordates and functions as a barrier of fluidal diffusion across the cell sheets. In order to study the dynamics of TJ formation in vivo during embryogenesis, we have generated a transgenic medaka line that expresses claudin-7 protein fused to enhanced green fluorescent protein under the regulation of the red seabream beta-actin promoter in transparent medaka embryos. Claudins contain four transmembrane domains and have been identified as the key molecules that dictate the function of TJs. This transgenic medaka line will thus be useful for imaging of TJs in living embryos and hence in screening for mutations affecting cell-cell adhesion.

- Wideband impedance spectrum analyzer for process automation applications.
- Doerner S1, Schneider T, Hauptmann PR.Author information 1Institute of Micro and Sensor Systems, Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg, Universitätsplatz 2, D-39106 Magdeburg, Germany. s.doerner@ieee.orgAbstractFor decades impedance spectroscopy is used in technical laboratories and research departments to investigate effects or material characteristics that affect the impedance spectrum of the sensor. Establishing this analytical approach for process automation and stand-alone applications will deliver additional and valuable information beside traditional measurement techniques such as the measurement of temperature, flow rate, and conductivity, among others. As yet, most of the current impedance analysis methods are suited for laboratory applications only since they involve stand-alone network analyzers that are slow, expensive, large, or immobile. Furthermore, those systems offer a large range of functionality that is not being used in process control and other fields of application. We developed a sensor interface based on high speed direct digital signal processing offering wideband impedance spectrum analysis with high resolution for frequency adjustment, excellent noise rejection, very high measurement rate, and convenient data exchange to common interfaces. The electronics has been implemented on two small circuit boards and it is well suited for process control applications such as monitoring phase transitions, characterization of fluidal systems, and control of biological processes. The impedance spectrum analyzer can be customized easily for different measurement applications by adapting the appropriate sensor module. It has been tested for industrial applications, e.g., dielectric spectroscopy and high temperature gas analysis.

- The influence of silver additives on titania photoactivity in the photooxidation of phenol.
- Dobosz A1, Sobczyński A.Author information 1Poznań University of Economics, Faculty of Commodity Science, Al Niepodleglości 10, 60-967 Poznań, Poland.AbstractPhotodeposition of small amounts of metal silver on the surface of titanium(IV) oxide enhances its photoactivity in phenol decomposition. The applied method of in situ metal photoreduction resulted in preparing better Ag/TiO(2) systems than those already described in literature. Optimum silver loading on titania amounts to 0.5 wt%. The photoreaction, which finally leads to total phenol mineralization, proceeds via intermediate compounds. Hydroquinone, benzoquinone and catechol are the main intermediates determined quantitatively. Photooxidation of the compounds competes with the photooxidation of phenol. At higher phenol concentration, >6 x 10(-4)mol dm(-3), the rate of the photocatalytic reaction is strongly retarded. The photoreaction was conducted in a specially designed, three-phase fluidal photoreactor.
