Headquarters
The Bulgarian National Bank's headquarters in Sofia are located on the central Battenberg Square. The current edifice was commissioned to the noted architects Ivan Vasilyov and Dimitar Tsolov and built between 1934 and 1939 in the strict and non-decorative Neoclassical style of the time. It spreads over an area of 3,700 m² and has four overground and three underground storeys. The inner decoration is the work of Ivan Penkov and Dechko Uzunov.

- The blood-nerve barrier (BNB) is a dynamic and competent interface between the endoneurial microenvironment and the surrounding extracellular space or blood. It is localised at the innermost layer of the multilayered ensheathing perineurium and endoneurial microvessels, and is the key structure that

- Tumor Necrosis Factor-α Enhances CCL2 and ICAM-1 Expression in Peripheral Nerve Microvascular Endoneurial Endothelial Cells.
- Langert KA, Von Zee CL, Stubbs Jr EB.AbstractRecruitment and trafficking of autoreactive leukocytes across the blood-nerve barrier is an early pathological insult in Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), an aggressive autoimmune disorder of the PNS. Whereas the etiology and pathogenesis of GBS remain unclear, pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), are reported to be elevated early in the course of GBS and may initiate nerve injury by activating the blood-nerve barrier (BNB). Previously, we reported that disrupting leukocyte trafficking in vivo therapeutically attenuates the course of an established animal model of GBS. Here, peripheral nerve microvascular endoneurial endothelial cells (PNMECs) that form the BNB were harvested from rat sciatic nerves, immortalized by SV40 large T antigen transduction, and subsequently challenged with TNF-α. Relative changes in chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 (CCL2) and intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 expression were determined. We report that TNF-α elicits marked dose- and time-dependent increases in CCL2 and ICAM-1 mRNA and protein content and promotes secretion of functional CCL2 from immortalized and primary PNMEC cultures. TNF-α mediated secretion of CCL2 promotes, in vitro, the transendothelial migration of CCR2-expressing THP-1 monocytes. Increased CCL2 and ICAM-1 expression in response to TNF-α may facilitate recruitment and trafficking of autoreactive leukocytes across the blood-nerve barrier in autoimmune disorders, including GBS.
