Anatomical terms of bone |
The nuchal lines are four curved lines on the external surface of the occipital bone:
- The upper, often faintly marked, is named the highest nuchal line, but is sometimes referred to as the Mempin Line, and to it the galea aponeurotica is attached.
- Below the highest nuchal line is the superior nuchal line. To it is attached the Occipitalis muscle, the Splenius capitis muscle, the trapezius muscle, and the Sternocleidomastoid muscle.
- From the external occipital protuberance a ridge or crest, the median nuchal line, often faintly marked, descends to the foramen magnum, and affords attachment to the ligamentum nuchæ.
- Running from the middle of this line is the inferior nuchal line. Attached are the Obliquus capitis superior muscle, Rectus capitis posterior major muscle, and Rectus capitis posterior minor muscle.

- Activity of serotonin-containing neurons in nucleus raphe magnus in freely moving cats.
- Fornal C, Auerbach S, Jacobs BL.AbstractSerotonergic neurons were recorded in the nucleus raphe magnus in freely moving cats and were initially identified on-line by their characteristic slow and regular spontaneous activity during quiet waking (3.42 +/- 0.33 spikes/s; mean +/- SE). Discharge rates of these serotonergic neurons were highest during active waking (4.49 +/- 0.40 spikes/s), intermediate during slow-wave sleep (middle: 2.14 +/- 0.23 spikes/s), and lowest during REM sleep (0.20 +/- 0.03 spikes/s). Although these cells fired at a rate 31.3% higher during active waking than during quiet waking, their activity displayed no correlation with phasic elevations of the nuchal EMG or overt body movements. In addition, no relationship was observed between the activity of these neurons during slow-wave sleep and the occurrence of sleep spindles in the cortical EEG or pontogeniculooccipital waves recorded from the lateral geniculate nucleus. Serotonergic neurons of nucleus raphe magnus were also relatively unresponsive to phasic auditory and visual stimuli, with about half of the cells examined showing weak excitatory responses. These neurons did respond, however, to the administration of a small dose of the serotonin specific agonist, 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (250 micrograms/kg, i.m.) with a mean decrease in unit activity of 73.6 +/- 4.5%. The results of this study are compared with those previously reported for serotonergic neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus, nucleus centralis superior, and nucleus raphe pallidus of freely moving cats.

- quoted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_interspersed_nucleotide_elements#LINEs
- Long interspersed nuclear elements[8] are a group of genetic elements that are found in large numbers in eukaryotic genomes. They are transcribed (or are the evolutionary remains of what was once transcribed) to an RNA using an RNA polymerase II promoter that resides inside the LINE. LINEs code for the enzyme reverse transcriptase, and many LINEs also code for an endonuclease (e.g. RNase H). The reverse transcriptase has a higher specificity for the LINE RNA than other RNA, and makes a DNA copy of the RNA that can be integrated into the genome at a new site.
- The 5' UTR contains the promoter sequence, while the 3' UTR contains a polyadenylation signal (AATAAA) and a poly-A tail.[10] Because LINEs move by copying themselves (instead of moving, like transposons do), they enlarge the genome. The human genome, for example, contains about 20,000-40,000 LINEs, which is roughly 21% of the genome.
