This interaction promotes the aggregation of the AuNPs inducing a huge enhancement of the melamine signals in the Raman spectrum due to the formation of SERS "hot spots". An external standard calibration method was employed for quantitative analysis and the method was validated for linearity, sensitivity, repeatability and recovery. A good linearity (R(2)=0.99) was found in the concentration range of 0.31-5.0mgl(-1) in milk with a limit of detection of 0.17mgl(-1). This method does not require a long extraction procedure (total analysis time can be lower than 30min) and can be reliably used for melamine detection in milk matrix in accordance with the European law limits.

This is especially true for procedures involving the drilling of bone, which require a great amount of adroitness and experience due to difficulties arising from vibration and drill bit breakage. One of the potential difficulties with the drilling of bone is the lack of consistent material evacuation from the drill's flutes as the material tends to clog. This clogging leads to significant increases in force and torque experienced by the surgeon. Clogging was observed for feed rates greater than 0.5 mm/s and spindle speeds less than 2500 rpm. The drilling simulation systems that have been created to date do not address the issue of drill flute clogging. This paper presents force and torque prediction models that account for this phenomenon. The two coefficients of friction required by these models were determined via a set of calibration experiments. The accuracy of both models was evaluated by an additional set of validation experiments resulting in average R(2) regression correlation values of 0.9546 and 0.9209 for the force and torque prediction models, respectively. The resulting models can be adopted by haptic simulation systems to provide a more realistic tactile output.

The ratios of the monomers, the dopant, and the cross-linker, were optimised by a OA9 (3(4)) orthogonal array design. The resultant sorbent was characterised by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and magnetometry. The binding performances of the sorbent were evaluated by static, kinetic and selective adsorption experiments. The nano-sorbent was successfully applied to solid phase extraction followed by spectrophotometric determination of DMZ in real samples. Spiked recoveries ranged from 90.33% to 106.20% for egg, milk powder, and pig feed samples, with relative standard deviations of less than 4.54%.

In this paper we compare 4-(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-4-methylmorpholinium chloride (DMTMM) to EDC/NHS activation chemistry for HA ligation using an array of substrates including small, large and functional molecules. For all the substrates tested DMTMM yields were superior at parity of feed ratio. DMTMM chemistry resulted effective also in absence of pH control, which is essential for EDC/NHS conjugation. Overall our results demonstrate that DMTMM is more efficient than EDC/NHS for ligation of amines to HA and does not require accurate pH control or pH shift during the reaction to be effective. DMTMM-mediated ligation is a new promising chemical tool to synthesize HA derivatives for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications.
