The epiglottic vallecula is a depression (vallecula) just behind the root of the tongue between the folds in the throat. These depressions serve as "spit traps"; saliva is temporarily held in the valleculae to prevent initiation of the swallowing reflex.
The vallecula is an important reference landmark used duringintubation of the trachea. The procedure requires the blade-tip of a Macintosh-style laryngoscope to be placed as far as possible into the vallecula in order to facilitate directly visualize the glottis.

- Personal experience in performing linear stapler closure of the pharynx during 70 total laryngectomies is reported. Laryngeal staplers (55 and 60 cm) with an angled handle were used, permitting vertical closure with 19 or 20 metal staples in a double row. A closed technique was initially used, but,

- [Large epiglottic lipoma. Intubation method for large tumors in the pharynx and larynx].
- Welinder NR, Ibsen M, Andreassen UK, Berthelsen PG.AbstractLarge benign tumours in the aperture of the larynx are uncommon, and they are especially rare on the epiglottis. They are, however, important as they may cause fatal airway obstruction particularly at induction of general anaesthesia. We present a patient with a large lipoma originating in the vallecula epiglottica and the lingual surface of the epiglottis. The difficulties involved in tracheal intubation and possible solutions are discussed. In this case intubation was performed under local anaesthesia with the patient fully awake. A commissure laryngoscope was used for visualisation of the laryngeal inlet and a flexible bougie was inserted into the trachea. After removal of the laryngoscope a 7 mm ID endotracheal tube was advanced over the bougie into the trachea. After securing the airway in this way general anaesthesia was induced and the table tennis ball sized lipoma was uneventfully removed.

- The case is reported of a 64-year-old man in whom a pedunculated tumor of the Vallecula epiglottica occurred and was excised. Histologically it proved to be a dedifferentiated liposarcoma. The patient is well and free of disease 18 months later. The literature is reviewed and 20 other cases of lipos
