Baby cherry-crowned mangabey, Colchester Zoo, Colchester, Essex, England, born 16 July 2007
The term mangabey can refer to three different genera of Old World monkeys. Lophocebus and Cercocebus were once thought to be very closely related, so much so that all the species were in one genus. However, it is now understood that the species within genus Lophocebus are more closely related to the baboons in genus Papio, while the species within genus Cercocebus are more closely related to the Mandrill. The single species in Rungwecebus was discovered recently.
The three genera of mangabeys are:
- Lophocebus, the crested mangabeys
- Rungwecebus, the highland mangabey (aka kipunji)
- Cercocebus, the white-eyelid mangabeys

- Natural-host sooty mangabeys (SM) infected with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) exhibit high viral loads but do not develop disease, whereas infection of rhesus macaques (RM) causes CD4(+) T cell loss and AIDS. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain these divergent outcomes, including

- Although immune pressure exerted by MHC class I-restricted cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) are an important determinant of outcome in pathogenic HIV and SIV infection, lack of data on MHC class I genes has hampered study of its role in natural hosts with nonpathogenic SIV infection. - Sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys) are natural SIV hosts and the presumed source of HIV-2 and SIVmac, which makes them a valuable model for HIV/SIV research. However, like other African primates, little is known about their major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genetics. In this study, we used Roche
