The radicals with planar or almost-planar bridges are charge-delocalized mixed-valence species. Localization of charge occurs only on radicals with highly twisted biphenyl bridges. The electronic coupling between the azobenzene charge-bearing units, calculated as half the energy of the intervalence band for the charge-delocalized and by the Hush equation for the charge-localized radicals, decreases with the distance and torsion angle between azobenzene units. These radicals have smaller electronic couplings between charge-bearing units than other mixed-valence organic radicals with similar bridges. However, the application of a three-stage model to the tris(azobenzene) radical anion intervalence band yields an electronic coupling between consecutive azobenzenes that is higher than in any of the bis(azobenzene) radicals studied.

It is applied to the design of an n-bit shift register memory that could conceivably be built using accessible technologies. To achieve this, the entire complex structure of the device would be built to atomic precision using feedback-controlled lithography to provide atomic-level control of silicon devices, controlled wet-chemical synthesis of molecular insulating pillars above the silicon, and controlled wet-chemical self-assembly of modular molecular devices to these pillars that connect to external metal electrodes (leads). The shift register consists of n connected cells that read data from an input electrode, pass it sequentially between the cells under the control of two external clock electrodes, and deliver it finally to an output device. The proposed cells are trimeric oligoporphyrin units whose internal states are manipulated to provide functionality, covalently connected to other cells via dipeptide linkages. Signals from the clock electrodes are conveyed by oligoporphyrin molecular wires, and μ-oxo porphyrin insulating columns are used as the supporting pillars. The developed multiscale modelling technique is applied to determine the characteristics of this molecular device, with in particular utilization of the inverted region for molecular electron-transfer processes shown to facilitate latching and control using exceptionally low energy costs per logic operation compared to standard CMOS shift register technology.

Bimetallic ruthenium complexes comprising this ditopic ligand [L4 Ru-C,N-bbi-C,N-RuL4 ] were obtained by a transmetalation methodology (C,N-bbi-C,N=benzobis(N-pyridyl-N'-methyl-imidazolylidene). The two metal centers are electronically decoupled when the ruthenium is in a pseudotetrahedral geometry imparted by a cymene spectator ligand (L4 =[(cym)Cl]). Ligand exchange of the Cl(-) /cymene ligands for two bipyridine or four MeCN ligands induced a change of the coordination geometry to octahedral. As a consequence, the ruthenium centers, separated through space by more than 10 Å, become electronically coupled, which is evidenced by two distinctly different metal-centered oxidation processes that are separated by 134 mV (L4 =[(bpy)2 ]; bpy=2,2'-bipyridine) and 244 mV (L4 =[(MeCN)4 ]), respectively. Hush analysis of the intervalence charge-transfer bands in the mixed-valent species indicates substantial valence delocalization in both complexes (delocalization parameter Γ=0.41 and 0.37 in the bpy and MeCN complexes, respectively). Spectroelectrochemical measurements further indicated that the mixed-valent Ru(II) /Ru(III) species and the fully oxidized Ru(III) /Ru(III) complexes gradually decompose when bound to MeCN ligands, whereas the bpy spectators significantly enhance the stability. These results demonstrate the efficiency of carbenes and, in particular, of the bbi ligand scaffold for mediating electron transfer and for the fabrication of molecular redox switches. Moreover, the relevance of spectator ligands is emphasized for tailoring the degree of electronic communication through the benzobis(carbene) linker.
