• 急性咳嗽：3週間以下。感染性の疾患が多い。胸部レントゲンで異常を認めることが多い。
• 遷延性咳嗽：8週未満。

• 慢性咳
• 気管支喘息、上気道咳症候群、胃食道逆流症、感染症後の持続咳、慢性心不全、心因性咳嗽、ACE阻害薬、百日咳、結核、癌(肺、甲状腺、頚部、悪性リンパ腫)

日内変動

• 気管支喘息(朝と夜に多い)、胃食道逆流症(食後、睡眠中)、上気道咳症候群

増悪因子

• 臥床：心不全、上気道咳症候群
• 労作：心不全、誤嚥
• 食事：誤嚥
