- 亜鉛、銅その他の金属の溶解時に発生する金属ヒューム(金属酸化物、0.5μm以下)を多量に吸入した後、数時間後に見られる発熱でインフルエンザ様の症状としてとらえられる。
- 金属は特に亜鉛で多く、亜鉛熱 zinc fume feverとも呼ばれる。
- 潜時は数時間から12時間、あるいは2から8時間と記載されている。
- 金属ヒュームが肺組織タンパク質を変性させ、その変性したタンパク質が抗原となり、アレルギー性機序により発熱を来すと言われている。
- 12~24時間で倦怠感を残して解熱すると言われている。
- 感染症と違って、何度でも発熱しうる。
- 予防は原因の回避である。
