定義
- 不妊：生殖可能な年齢にあり、正常な性生活を営んでいる夫婦が、避妊期間を除いて2年以上経過しているにもかかわらず妊娠の成立をみない状態。
- 2年という期間は結婚後妊娠成立までの期間が2年以内で90%に達し、この期間を過ぎると妊娠する例が少ないため。
- 不妊症：不妊状態にある男女が挙児を希望して妊娠の成立を得るために、何らかの医学的診断、治療を必要とする場合。
疫学
- 全夫婦の約10%程度に見られる。
分類
原発性か続発性か
- 原発性不妊症 primary infertility：過去2年間、妊娠の経験のまったくない場合
- 続発性不妊症 secondary infertility：同一男女の間に1回の妊娠経験があるにもかかわらず、その後、生殖可能な年齢にありながら、挙児を希望して2年間以上妊娠が成立しない場合。
