Selenous acid (or selenious acid) is the chemical compound with the formula H2SeO3. Structurally, it is more accurately described by (HO)2SeO. It is the principal oxoacid of selenium; the other being selenic acid.

Formation and properties[edit source | edit]
Selenous acid is analogous to sulfurous acid, but it is more readily isolated. Selenous acid is easily formed upon the addition of selenium dioxide to water. As a crystalline solid, the compound can be seen as pyramidal molecules that are interconnected with hydrogen bonds. In solution it is a diprotic acid:[2]

It is used in organic synthesis for the synthesis of 1,2-diketones (e.g. glyoxal).[3]
Uses[edit source | edit]
The major use is in changing the color of steel, especially the steel in guns, the so-called "blueing" process which uses selenous acid, copper(II) nitrate, and nitric acid to change the color of the steel from silver-grey to blue-grey. Some older razor blades were also made of blued steel.[4]
Another use for selenious acid is the chemical darkening and patination of copper, brass and bronze, producing a rich dark brown color that can be further enhanced with mechanical abrasion.[citation needed]
Selenious acid is a key component of the Mecke reagent used for drug testing.[5]
Health effects[edit source | edit]
Like many selenium compounds, selenous acid is highly toxic, and ingestion of any significant quantity of selenous acid is usually fatal. Symptoms of selenium poisoning can occur several hours after exposure, and may include stupor, nausea, severe hypotension and death.[6]

- Colloidally stable selenium@copper selenide core@shell nanoparticles as selenium source for manufacturing of copper-indium-selenide solar cells.
- Dong H1, Quintilla A, Cemernjak M, Popescu R, Gerthsen D, Ahlswede E, Feldmann C.Author information 1Institut für Anorganische Chemie, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Engesserstraße 15, D-76131 Karlsruhe, Germany.AbstractSelenium nanoparticles with diameters of 100-400nm are prepared via hydrazine-driven reduction of selenious acid. The as-prepared amorphous, red selenium (a-Se) particles were neither a stable phase nor were they colloidally stable. Due to phase transition to crystalline (trigonal), grey selenium (t-Se) at or even below room temperature, the particles merged rapidly and recrystallized as micronsized crystal needles. As a consequence, such Se particles were not suited for layer deposition and as a precursor to manufacture thin-film CIS (copper indium selenide/CuInSe2) solar cells. To overcome this restriction, Se@CuSe core@shell particles are presented here. For these Se@CuSe core@shell nanoparticles, the phase transition a-Se→t-Se is shifted to temperatures higher than 100°C. Moreover, a spherical shape of the particles is retained even after phase transition. Composition and structure of the Se@CuSe core@shell nanostructure are evidenced by electron microscopy (SEM/STEM), DLS, XRD, FT-IR and line-scan EDXS. As a conceptual study, the newly formed Se@CuSe core@shell nanostructures with CuSe acting as a protecting layer to increase the phase-transition temperature and to improve the colloidal stability were used as a selenium precursor for manufacturing of thin-film CIS solar cells and already lead to conversion efficiencies up to 3%.

- Hematological, biochemical and enzymological responses in an Indian major carp Labeo rohita induced by sublethal concentration of waterborne selenite exposure.
- Ramesh M1, Sankaran M1, Veera-Gowtham V1, Poopal RK2.Author information 1Unit of Toxicology, Department of Zoology, School of Life Sciences, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore 641046, Tamil Nadu, India.2Unit of Toxicology, Department of Zoology, School of Life Sciences, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore 641046, Tamil Nadu, India. Electronic address: poopalramakrishanan@ymail.com.AbstractSelenium (Se) pollution in aquatic ecosystem is an environmental issue throughout the world. Elevated concentrations of inorganic Se from agricultural and industrial processes may cause adverse biological effects in aquatic organisms such as fish. In the present study, Labeo rohita an Indian major carp were exposed to sublethal concentration of Se (sodium selenite) for 35days and certain hematological, biochemical and enzymological parameters were estimated. The median lethal concentration of waterborne sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) to L. rohita was found to be 23.89mgL(-1) for 96h. During sublethal (2.38mgL(-1)) treatment, hematological and biochemical parameters such as hemoglobin (Hb) (except 14th day), hematocrit (Hct), erythrocyte (RBC) count and protein levels were found to be decreased in Se treated fish whereas leucocyte (WBC) count and glucose level increased in Se treated fish throughout the study period. The enzymatic parameters such as glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities were found to be increased in liver of Se treated fish L. rohita. A biphasic response was observed in the value of mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC). The alterations of these parameters can be used as suitable biomarkers in monitoring of selenium in the aquatic environment and to protect aquatic life.

- Selenium deficiency in pediatric patients with intestinal failure as a consequence of drug shortage.
- Davis C1, Javid PJ, Horslen S.Author information 1Seattle Children's Hospital, Seattle, Washington.AbstractBACKGROUND: Parenteral nutrition (PN) is a lifesaving therapy for children with intestinal failure and can now be used chronically without the life-threatening complications of the past. Adequate intravenous trace element supplementation is required as part of a complete nutrition prescription. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the number of drug shortages, including sterile injectable agents used as PN components, has increased since 2010. Selenious acid as an individual additive was recently unavailable at our institution for 9 months due to a national shortage.
