- High strength steels, stiffness of vehicle front-end structure, and risk of injury to rear seat occupants.
- Sahraei E1, Digges K2, Marzougui D3, Roddis K2.Author information 1Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 77 Mass Ave, room 5-218B, Cambridge, MA 02139, USA. Electronic address: elhams@mit.edu.2The George Washington University, Washington, DC, USA.3The George Mason University, Fairfax, VA, USA.AbstractPrevious research has shown that rear seat occupant protection has decreased over model years, and front-end stiffness is a possible factor causing this trend. In this research, the effects of a change in stiffness on protection of rear seat occupants in frontal crashes were investigated. The stiffness was adjusted by using higher strength steels (DP and TRIP), or thicker metal sheets. Finite element simulations were performed, using an LS Dyna vehicle model coupled with a MADYMO dummy. Simulation results showed that an increase in stiffness, to the extent it happened in recent model years, can increase the risk of AIS3+ head injuries from 4.8% in the original model (with a stiffness of 1000N/mm) to 24.2% in a modified model (with a stiffness of 2356N/mm). The simulations also showed an increased risk of chest injury from 9.1% in the original model to 11.8% in the modified model. Distribution of injuries from real world accident data confirms the findings of the simulations.

- Father Absence and Reproduction-Related Outcomes in Malaysia, a Transitional Fertility Population.
- Sheppard P1, Snopkowski K, Sear R.Author information 1Department of Population Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Keppel Street, London, WC1E 7HT, UK, paula.sheppard@lshtm.ac.uk.AbstractFather absence is consistently associated with children's reproductive outcomes in industrialized countries. It has been suggested that father absence acts as a cue to particular environmental conditions that influence life history strategies. Much less is known, however, about the effects of father absence on such outcomes in lower-income countries. Using data from the 1988 Malaysian Family Life Survey (n = 567), we tested the effect of father absence on daughters' age at menarche, first marriage, and first birth; parity progression rates; and desired completed family size in Malaysia, a country undergoing an economic and fertility transition. Father absence during later childhood (ages 8 to 15), although not during earlier childhood, was associated with earlier progressions to first marriage and first birth, after controlling for other confounders. Father absence does not affect age at menarche, desired family size, or progression from first to second birth. The patterns found in this transitional population partly mirror those in developed societies, where father absence accelerates reproductive events. There is, however, a notable contrast between the acceleration in menarche for father-absent girls consistently found in developed societies and the lack of any association in our findings. The mechanisms through which father absence affects reproduction may differ in different ecological contexts. In lower-income contexts, direct paternal investment or influence may be of more importance in determining reproductive behavior than whether fathers act as a cue to environmental conditions.

- Comparative performance of the probable case definitions of dengue by WHO (2009) and the WHO-SEAR expert group (2011).
- Nujum ZT, Thomas A, Vijayakumar K, Nair RR, Pillai MR, Indu PS, Sundar S, Gopakumar S, Mohan D, Sudheeshkumar TK.AbstractBackground The primary objective of this study was to find the performance of the 2009 probable case definition of dengue and compare it with the definition given by the WHO-SEAR expert group in 2011. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, which is hyperendemic for dengue. A consecutive series of 851 participants defined by the selection criteria were recruited from the primary, secondary, and tertiary health care settings. Sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, and likelihood ratios of the clinical case definitions were calculated using reverse transcriptase-polymerized chain reaction (RT-PCR) as gold standard in case of fever less than or equal to 5 days and serology (IgM positivity) for fever >5 days. Diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) was also calculated as a single indicator of performance of the case definition. Results The 2009 World Health Organization (WHO) case definition had a sensitivity of 76·4% (69·6-82·1) and negative predictive value of 87·5%. The 2011 WHO-SEAR expert group case definition had a higher sensitivity of 87·9% (82·2-91·9) but lower negative predictive value of 86·6%. The three independent criteria which were significantly associated with dengue were thrombocytopenia less than 150 000 (OR 2·80), leukopenia (OR 2·28), and absence of backache (OR 2·68). The performance of 2009 case definition was better (DOR 2·4) than the 2011 WHO-SEAR expert group case definition. This was further enhanced when thrombocytopenia was specified as platelet count less than 150 000 (DOR2·7). When 'no backahe' was added as an additional criteria, the performance of both definitions improved. Conclusions The 2009 WHO case definition has better discriminatory power than the 2011 WHO-SEAR expert group case definition. The performance of 2009 WHO case definition is enhanced by specifying thrombocytopenia as platelet count less than 150 000. The inclusion of 'no backache' further improves the discriminatory power. This may be more useful in primary care settings, to rule out dengue.

- Computer simulation of epitaxial nucleation of a crystal on a crystalline surface.
- Mithen JP, Sear RP.Author information Department of Physics, University of Surrey, Guildford GU2 7XH, United Kingdom.AbstractWe present results of computer simulations of crystal nucleation on a crystalline surface, in the Lennard-Jones model. Motivated by the pioneering work of Turnbull and Vonnegut [Ind. Eng. Chem. 44, 1292 (1952)], we investigate the effects of a mismatch between the surface lattice constant and that of the bulk nucleating crystal. We find that the nucleation rate is maximum close to, but not exactly at, zero mismatch. The offset is due to the finite size of the nucleus. In agreement with a number of experiments, we find that even for large mismatches of 10% or more, the formation of the crystal can be epitaxial, meaning that the crystals that nucleate have a fixed orientation with respect to the surface lattice. However, nucleation is not always epitaxial, and loss of epitaxy does affect how the rate varies with mismatch. The surface lattice strongly influences the nucleation rate. We show that the epitaxy observed in our simulations can be predicted using calculations of the potential energy between the surface and the first layer of the nucleating crystal, in the spirit of simple approaches such as that of Hillier and Ward [Phys. Rev. B 54, 14037 (1996)].
