- Cell-type determination is a complex process driven by the combinatorial effect of extrinsic signals and the expression of transcription factors and regulatory genes. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are non-coding RNAs that, generally, inhibit the expression of target genes and have been involved, among other pr

- Autoimmune retinopathy (AIR) is an immune-mediated retinopathy, resulting from an immunologic process caused by the aberrant recognition of retinal antigens as autoantigens. The diagnosis of AIR involves the detection of antiretinal antibodies with concurrent clinical and electrophysiological eviden

- We previously reported that subretinal injection of AAV2/5 RK.cpde6β allowed long-term preservation of photoreceptor function and vision in the rod-cone dysplasia type 1 (rcd1) dog, a large animal model of naturally occurring PDE6β deficiency. The present study builds on these earlier findings to

- … In the phototransduction system of retinal photoreceptor cells, visual pigments are activated by the incident light and stimulate transducin, which in turn send electrical signals to downstream neural networks. … Since none of the proposed phototransduction models were able to reproduce the complex characteristics of the signal transduction system of retinal photoreceptor cells, we propose a model that may reproduce the light intensity-dependent amplification of incoming signals in both rods and cones. …

- Rods are cylindrical shaped photoreceptors. They are more numerous than cone cells, with an estimated 92 million rod cells located in the human retina. They function best in low intensity light (scotopic) and are thus responsible for vision in dimly lit surroundings, such as at dusk.
- Two or three types of cone photoreceptor and a single type of rod photoreceptor are present in the normal mammalian retina. Some non-mammalian retinas have even more cone types (see later). Two or three types of cone photoreceptor and a single type of rod photoreceptor are present in the normal mammalian retina.
- Author Summary The rod and cone photoreceptors in the retina are highly specialized neurons that capture photons under dim and bright light, respectively. Loss of rod photoreceptors is an early clinical manifestation in most retinal neurodegenerative diseases that eventually result in cone cell death and blindness.
