- Short communication: Bacterial counts in recycled manure solids bedding replaced daily or deep packed in freestalls.

Eighteen Holstein cows were housed in 1 pen with 18 stalls. One row of 9 stalls was equipped with mattresses topped with bedding. The back one-third of these stalls toward the alleyway was covered in 25mm of recycled manure solids, which was removed daily for the next 6 d and replaced with bedding from the brisket board and lunge space areas of stalls. The second row of 9 stalls was bedded for 3 wk with 100 to 150mm of deep-pack recycled manure bedding from which only fecal matter was removed daily. After 3 wk, bedding treatments were changed between rows in a switchback design. Mean total gram-negative bacterial counts did not differ between treatments throughout the experiment. Coliform and Klebsiella spp. bacterial counts were lower in daily replaced bedding compared with deep pack across the experiment and on each of d 0, 1, 2, and 6. Streptococcal counts were reduced in daily replacement stalls compared with deep-pack stalls on d 0 and greater in daily replacement stalls compared with deep-pack stalls on d 1, 2, and 6. Daily replacement of recycled manure bedding from the back one-third of the stalls appeared to be an effective approach to reducing exposure to coliforms, specifically Klebsiella, but not streptococci. However, bacterial counts in bedding from both treatments were elevated throughout the trial and resulted in considerable risk for exposure to teats and development of intramammary infections.

- A simplified version of the weight-bearing ankle lunge test: Description and test-retest reliability.

Electronic address: Franciscoayalarodriguez@gmail.com.4Faculty of Medicine, University of Murcia, Spain; Department of Traumatology, V. de la Arrixaca University Hospital, Murcia, Spain.AbstractThe purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to describe a new version of the weight-bearing ankle lunge test (WBLT) that is simple to administer, that allows clinicians and sports medicine practitioners to directly assess (in degrees) the ankle dorsiflexion range of motion in a very short period of time while adopting a comfortable testing position; as well as (2) to determine the test-retest reliability of the ankle dorsiflexion range of motion measure obtained from the new version of the WBLT. A total of 50 active adults completed this study. All participants performed the new version of the WBLT on three different occasions, with a two-week interval between testing sessions. Reliability was examined through the change in the mean between consecutive pairs of testing sessions (ChM), standard error of measurement (SEM), minimal detectable change at 95% confidence interval (MDC95), and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC2,k). The findings showed negligible or trivial ChM values for all the flexibility measures analysed (<1°). Furthermore, the SEM and MDC95 scores for the ankle dorsiflexion measure were 1.3 and 3.8 respectively, and the ICC2k was 0.95. Therefore, this study demonstrated that the ankle dorsiflexion measure obtained from the new version of the WBLT has excellent test-retest reliability scores. Thus, an observed change larger than 3.8° from baseline scores after performing a treatment would indicate that a real change in ankle dorsiflexion range of motion was likely.

- Evolution of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A duplication: a 2-year clinico-electrophysiological and lower-limb muscle MRI longitudinal study.
- Pelayo-Negro AL1, Gallardo E, García A, Sánchez-Juan P, Infante J, Berciano J.Author information 1Service of Neurology, University Hospital "Marqués de Valdecilla (IFIMAV)", University of Cantabria (UC) and "Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Neurodegenerativas (CIBERNED)", Santander, Spain.AbstractThe objective of this study was to analyze Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A) evolution. We conducted a 2-year longitudinal study in 14 CMT1A patients and 14 age- and sex-matched controls. In the patients, we performed neurological examination with hand-held dynamometry, electrophysiology, and lower-limb muscle MRI, both at baseline and 2 years later, while controls were examined at baseline only. Patients' ages ranged from 12 to 51 years. Outstanding manifestations on initial evaluation included pes cavus, areflexia, lower-limb weakness, and foot hypopallesthesia. In evaluating muscle power, good correlation was observed between manual testing and dynamometry. Compared to controls, Lunge, 10-Meter-Walking, and 9-Hole-Peg tests were impaired. Their CMT neuropathy score and functional disability scale showed that patients exhibited mild phenotype and at most slight walking difficulty. Electrophysiology revealed marked nerve conduction slowing and variable compound muscle action potential amplitude reduction. On lower-limb muscle MRI, there was distally accentuated fatty infiltration accompanied by edema in calf muscles. All these clinico-electrophysiological and imaging findings remained almost unaltered during monitoring. Using multivariate analysis, no significant predictors of progression associated to the disease were obtained. We conclude that in the 2-year period of study, CMT1A patients showed mild progression with good concordance between clinico-electrophysiological and imaging findings.

- Functional movement screen scores in a group of running athletes.
- Loudon JK1, Parkerson-Mitchell AJ, Hildebrand LD, Teague C.Author information 11Division of Physical Therapy, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina; 2Sport and Spine, Overland Park, Kansas; and 3Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, University of Kansas, Kansas City, Kansas.AbstractLoudon, JK, Parkerson-Mitchell, AJ, Hildebrand, LD, and Teague, C. Functional movement screen scores in a group of running athletes. J Strength Cond Res 28(4): 909-913, 2014-The purpose of this study was to determine the mean values of the functional movement screen (FMS) in a group of long-distance runners. The secondary aims were to investigate whether the FMS performance differed between sexes and between young and older runners. Forty-three runners, 16 women (mean age = 33.5 years, height = 165.2 cm, weight = 56.3 kg, and body mass index [BMI] = 20.6) and 27 men (mean age = 39.3 years, height = 177.6 cm, weight = 75.8 kg, and BMI = 24.2) performed the FMS. All the runners were injury-free and ran >30 km·wk. Independent t-tests were performed on the composite scores to examine the differences between men and women and also between young (<40 years) and older runners (>40 years). Contingency tables (2 × 2) were developed for each of the 7 screening tests to further look at the differences in groups for each single test. The χ values were calculated to determine significant differences. Statistical significance was set at p ≤ 0.05. There was no significant difference in the composite score between women and men. There were significant differences between the sexes in the push-up and straight leg test scores, with the women scoring better on each test. A significant difference was found in the composite scores between younger and older runners (p < 0.000). Additional score differences were found for the squat, hurdle step, and in-line lunge tests with the younger runners scoring better. This study provided mean values for the FMS in a cohort of long-distance runners. These values can be used as a reference for comparing FMST scores in other runners who are screened with this tool.
