This article is about the journal as a written medium. For other uses, see Journal (disambiguation).
A journal (through French from Latin diurnalis, daily) has several related meanings:
- a daily record of events or business; a private journal is usually referred to as a diary
- a newspaper or other periodical, in the literal sense of one published each day
- many publications issued at stated intervals, such as academic journals (including scientific journals), or the record of the transactions of a society, are often called journals.[1] In academic use, a journal refers to a serious, scholarly publication that is peer-reviewed. A non-scholarly magazine written for an educated audience about an industry or an area of professional activity is usually called a trade magazine.[2]
The word "journalist", for one whose business is writing for the public press and nowadays also other media, has been in use since the end of the 17th century.
Public journal
Main article: Public journal
A public journal is a record of day-by-day events in a parliament or congress. It is also called minutes or records.
Business and accounting
The term "journal" is also used in business:
- A journal is a book or computer file in which monetary transactions are entered the first time they are processed. This journal lists transactions in chronological sequence by date prior to a transfer of the same transactions to a ledger in the process of bookkeeping
- Narrations or equivalent to a ship's log, as a record of the daily run, such as observations, weather changes, or other events of daily importance

- Accuracy and reproducibility of aortic annulus sizing using a dedicated three-dimensional computed tomography reconstruction tool in patients evaluated for transcatheter aortic valve replacement.
- Stortecky S, Heg D, Gloekler S, Wenaweser P, Windecker S, Buellesfeld L.Author information Department of Cardiology, Swiss Cardiovascular Centre, Bern University Hospital, Bern, Switzerland.AbstractAims: To evaluate the accuracy and reproducibility of aortic annulus sizing using a multislice computed tomography (MSCT) based aortic root reconstruction tool compared with conventional imaging among patients evaluated for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Methods and results: Patients referred for TAVR underwent standard preprocedural assessment of aortic annulus parameters using MSCT, angiography and transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE). Three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction of MSCT images of the aortic root was performed using 3mensio (3mensio Medical Imaging BV, Bilthoven, The Netherlands), allowing for semi-automated delineation of the annular plane and assessment of annulus perimeter, area, maximum, minimum and virtual diameters derived from area and perimeter (aVD and pVD). A total of 177 patients were enrolled. We observed a good inter-observer variability of 3-D reconstruction assessments with concordance coefficients for agreement of 0.91 (95% CI: 0.87-0.93) and 0.91 (0.88-0.94) for annulus perimeter and area assessments, respectively. 3-D derived pVD and aVD correlated very closely with a concordance coefficient of 0.97 (0.96-0.98) with a mean difference of 0.5±0.3 mm (pVD-aVD). 3-D derived pVD showed the best, but moderate concordance with diameters obtained from coronal MSCT (0.67, 0.56-0.75; 0.3±1.8 mm), and the lowest concordance with diameters obtained from TEE (0.42, 0.31-0.52; 1.9±1.9 mm). Conclusions: MSCT-based 3-D reconstruction of the aortic annulus using the 3mensio software enables accurate and reproducible assessment of aortic annulus dimensions.

In this integrated mechanism review, we discuss evidence in support of the contention that the preterm newborn is capable of intermittent or sustained systemic inflammation (ISSI), which appears to contribute more to adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants than does shorter duration inflammation.Pediatric Research (2014); doi:10.1038/pr.2013.238.

- Velasco S, Kim S, Bleakney R, Jamal SA.Author information Unidad de Endocrinología, Clínica Alemana de Santiago, Facultad de Medicina Clínica Alemana, Universidad del Desarrollo, Santiago, Chile.AbstractThe pathophysiology of atypical fractures is unknown. We compared characteristics of patients with atypical femoral fractures and hip fractures in typical locations of the femur. Patients with atypical fracture reported a longer duration of use of bisphosphonates, had higher body mass index, and higher total hip bone mineral density. Further studies are needed.

The radiographic evaluation of the callus formation shows a clear effect of vitamin D on fracture healing in absence of additional variables.
