- Adherence to imatinib therapy in patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors.
- Blay JY, Rutkowski P.Author information Department of Medicine, Centre Léon-Bérard-Claude-Bernard Lyon-1 University, Lyon, France. Electronic address: jean-yves.blay@lyon.unicancer.fr.AbstractImatinib mesylate, an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is indicated for first-line treatment of patients with unresectable and/or metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). Imatinib also is approved as adjuvant therapy for patients following resection of primary GIST. Despite the efficacy of imatinib for the treatment of patients with GIST, adherence to treatment can prove difficult. Clinical studies have identified a number of factors that have a significant association with non-adherence to therapy, including age >51years, female sex, a high number of concomitant medications, and complications with patients' therapy or the disease itself. Moreover, treatment-related adverse events and increased healthcare costs have been shown to have an impact on patients' adherence to therapy. A study of perceptions of adherence to therapy found discrepancies between actual and perceived adherence rates; both patients and physicians overestimate adherence to treatment. Non-adherence to treatment is not exclusive to oncology, and occurs in other disease areas, particularly with chronic conditions. Evidence from other disease areas suggests that routine assessment of adherence and the implementation of adherence programs can lead to improvements in health status and reduced healthcare costs. Improving patient adherence to imatinib treatment for patients with unresectable/metastatic GIST is particularly important, because non-adherence has a significant impact on clinical outcomes and healthcare costs. Therefore, the effective management of treatment-related adverse events along with patient education may be important in keeping patients compliant with continuous therapy.

Electronic address: jslee@gist.ac.kr.AbstractWe demonstrate the well-defined control of phase transition of a polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) block copolymer from spherical micelles to lamellar structures, in which CdS and C60 nanoparticles (NPs) are selectively positioned at the P2VP domains. The CdS NPs are in situ synthesized using PS-b-P2VP block copolymer templates that are self-assembled in PS-selective solvents. The CdS-PS-b-P2VP micellar structures are transformed to lamellar phase by adjusting a solvent selectivity for both blocks. In addition, a binary system of CdS/C60 embedded in PS-b-P2VP lamellar structures (CdS/C60-PS-b-P2VP) is fabricated by embedding C60 molecules into P2VP domain though charge-transfer complexation between pyridine units of PS-b-P2VP and C60 molecules. The CdS/C60-PS-b-P2VP nanostructured films are characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-Vis spectrometer.

Electronic address: solar@smu.ac.kr.AbstractIn this study, a facile membrane modification method by spin-coating of pyrrole (Py) monomers dissolved in a volatile solvent followed by an interfacial polymerization is proposed. The surface of a commercial anion-exchange membrane (i.e., Neosepta-AFX, Astom Corp., Japan) was successfully modified with polypyrrole (Ppy) to improve the acid recovery performance in diffusion dialysis (DD). The result of DD experiments revealed that both the acid and metal ion transports are significantly influenced by the surface modification. The metal crossover through the membranes was largely reduced while mostly maintaining the acid permeability by introducing a thin Ppy layer with excellent repelling property to cations on the membrane surface. As a result, the anion-exchange membrane modified with the optimum content of Py monomer (5vol.%) exhibited excellent acid dialysis coefficient (KAcid) and selectivity (KAcid/KMetal) which is approximately twice as high as that of the pristine membrane.
