- Using ruthenium polypyridyl functionalized ZnO mesocrystals and gold nanoparticle dotted graphene composite for biological recognition and electrochemiluminescence biosensing.
- Liu S, Zhang J, Tu W, Bao J, Dai Z.Author information Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Biofunctional Materials, College of Chemistry and Materials Science, Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing 210023, P. R. China. daizhihuii@njnu.edu.cn.AbstractUsing ruthenium polypyridyl functionalized ZnO mesocrystals as bionanolabels, a universal biological recognition and biosensing platform based on gold nanoparticle (AuNP) dotted reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite was developed. AuNP-rGO accelerated electron transfer between the detection probe and the electrode, and increased the surface area of the working electrode to load greater amounts of the capture antibodies. The large surface area of ZnO mesocrystals was beneficial for loading a high content ruthenium polypyridyl complex, leading to an enhanced electrochemiluminescence signal. Using α-fetoprotein (AFP) as a model, a simple and sensitive sandwich-type electrochemiluminescence biosensor with tripropylamine (TPrA) as a coreactant for detection of AFP was constructed. The designed biosensor provided a good linear range from 0.04 to 500 ng mL-1 with a low detection limit of 0.031 ng mL-1 at a S/N of 3 for AFP determination. The proposed biological recognition and biosensing platform extended the application of ruthenium polypyridyl functionalized ZnO mesocrystals, which provided a new promising prospect.

- Observation of strong nano-effect via tuning distributed architecture of graphene oxide in poly(propylene carbonate).
- Gao J, Bai H, Zhou X, Yang G, Xu C, Zhang Q, Chen F, Fu Q.Author information College of Polymer Science and Engineering, State Key Laboratory of Polymer Materials Engineering, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610065, People's Republic of China.AbstractFor optimum reinforcement in polymer nanocomposite, a critical challenge is to realize the full 'nano-effect' of nanofillers at a high content, which is largely hindered by the strong tendency to aggregation of nanofillers. Here, by using a solvent-exchange and solution casting approach, we could incorporate a high-content graphene oxide (GO) into a soft biodegradable CO2-based poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) up to 20 wt% with excellent dispersion. Based on this, the distributed architecture of GO could be tuned from a 'GO dotted dispersion' and 'GO network' to strong 'GO co-continuous structure' with increasing GO content. As a result, a very strong 'nano-effect' of GO in the PPC matrix was observed: (1) the glass transition temperature of PPC was improved from 25 to 45 ° C for slightly confined molecular chains, and even to 100 ° C for highly confined ones; (2) the modified PPC showed drastically enhanced high-temperature mechanical properties, comparable to those of traditional polymers such as polypropylene (PP) and biopolymer poly(lactic acid) (PLA); and (3) such modified PPC exhibited an exciting solvent resistance compared to neat PPC. Our work provides an example to improve the high-temperature properties of a polymer via formation of filler co-continuous structure.

In this study, we have histologically examined incisor PDL of mandibles in 20 week-old male wild-type and periostin-deficient (periostin-/-) mice, by means of type I collagen, fibronectin, tenascin C, proliferating cell nuclear antigen, matrix metallo-proteinase (MMP)-1 and F4/80-positive monocyte/macrophage immunostaining, transmission electron microscopy and quantitative analysis of cell proliferation. Wild-type PDL featured well-arranged layers of collagen bundles intertwined with PDL cells, whose longitudinal axis ran parallel to the collagen fibers. However, cells in the periostin-/- PDL were irregularly distributed among collagen fibrils, which were also haphazardly arranged. Type I collagen and fibronectin reactivity was seen throughout the wild-type PDL, while in the periostin-/- PDL, only focal, uneven staining for these proteins could be seen. Similarly, tenascin C staining was evenly distributed in the wild-type PDL, but hardly seen in the periostin-/- PDL. MMP-1 immunoreactivity was uniformly distributed in the wild-type PDL, but only dotted staining could be discerned in the periostin-/- PDL. F4/80-positive monocyte/macrophages were found midway between tooth- and bone-related regions in the wild-type PDL, a pattern that could not be observed in the periostin-/- PDL. In summary, periostin deficiency may not only cause PDL collagen fibril disorganization, but could also affect the distribution of other major extracellular matrix proteins such as fibronectin and tenascin C.
