Chronic actinic dermatitis (also known as "Actinic reticuloid," "Chronic photosensitivity dermatitis," "Persistent light reactivity," and "Photosensitive eczema"[1]:37) is a condition where a subject's skin becomes inflamed due to a reaction to sunlight or artificial light. Patients often suffer from other related conditions of the skin that cause dermatitis in response to a variety of stimuli (e.g., flowers, sunscreens, cosmetics, etc.).
Diagnosis can occur at any age, ranging from soon after birth to adulthood. A GP may refer a patient to a Dermatologist if the condition is not showing clear symptoms and a variety of tests, usually undergone at a hospital, can then determine the exact nature and cause of the patients condition.
Reactions vary depending on the severity of the case, however include rashes; flared 'bumpy'patches, affected areas being extremely hot to touch, outbreaks shortly (or within 24 hours ) after direct or indirect exposure to UVA and/or UVB light. The skin most likely reacts on the upper chest, hands and face, however it is not unlikely for reactions to happen all over the body. The patient may feel burning, stinging or throbbing sensations in these areas, which causes mild, yet uncomfortable pain.

- Top dermatologic diagnoses by age.
- Landis ET, Davis SA, Taheri A1, Feldman SR.Author information 1Wake Forest School of Medicine.AbstractBackground: Although some skin conditions predominate in patients of certain ages, little data exists about the relative prevalence of dermatologic conditions by age. Objectives: To determine the common skin conditions by age group in the United States, both in dermatologist samples and for all specialties. Methods: The National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) was queried for top diagnoses at dermatologist and all skin disease visits from 1993-2010. ICD-9 coding was used for diagnoses. Results: There were 588 million estimated visits to dermatologists in the US from 1993-2010. Atopic dermatitis, acne, and actinic keratosis were the top diagnoses in all age groups. Common diagnoses in all groups included contact dermatitis and benign neoplasm. There were 740 million estimated skin disease visits to all physicians; more of these were acute or infectious. The percent of skin diseases seen by dermatologists gradually increased with age to a maximum of 55% in the 75-84 year age group. Conclusion: Dermatologic conditions seen in different age groups and between dermatologists and non-dermatologists vary. With advancing age, Americans increasingly seek a dermatologist rather than a non-dermatologist physician for skin conditions.
