- The geometric effect in palladium-gold catalysis. Is the coupling the rate-determining step in the vinyl-acetate synthesis?
- Mazzone G1, Rivalta I, Russo N, Sicilia E.Author information 1Dipartimento di Chimica, Università della Calabria, 87036, Arcavacata di Rende, Italy.AbstractFirst-principles calculations support the hypothesis that the appropriate spacing between Pd monomers controls the catalytic activity of Pd/Au catalysts in the vinyl acetate formation only if a vinyl surface species is involved in the rate-determining step of the reaction, opening new questions on these relevant catalytic systems.

- Dermatomyositis with massive ascites.
- Ota S1, Kasahara A, Yamada T, Tanimoto M.Author information 1Department of Internal Medicine, The Himeji St. Mary's Hospital, Himeji, Japan. seisukeota@mail.goo.ne.jpAbstractThere have been few reports of dermatomyositis causing ascites. Here we report a case of a 63-year-old man complaining of general fatigue and gastromegaly. Abdominal examination revealed distension without tenderness. Serum myogenic enzyme was elevated. Electromyographic investigation indicated low amplitude signs, which were compatible with muscle disorder. Abdominal paracentesis on the fifth day yielded 2,500 ml clear, serous fluid. The specific gravity was 1.026 (range 1.005-1.015), with a positive Rivalta reaction, 3.4 g/dl total protein, and 1.59 g/dl albumin, suggesting exudate. Excluding the other causes of exudative ascites, we considered that the ascites was caused by dermatomyositis.

- Activation of methane by the iron dimer cation. A theoretical study.
- Chiodo S1, Rivalta I, Michelini Mdel C, Russo N, Sicilia E, Ugalde JM.Author information 1Dipartimento di Chimica and Centro di Calcolo ad Alte Prestazioni per Elaborazioni Parallele e Distribuite-Centro d'Eccellenza MURST, Università della Calabria, I-87030 Arcavacata di Rende, Italy.AbstractA detailed investigation of the reaction mechanisms underlying the observed reactivity of the iron dimer cation with respect to methane has been performed by density functional hybrid (B3LYP) and nonhybrid (BPW91) calculations. Minima and transition states have been fully optimized and characterized along the potential energy surfaces leading to three different exit channels for both the ground and the first excited states of the dimer. A comparison with our previous work covering the reactivity of the Fe(+) monomer was made to underline similarities and differences of the reaction mechanisms. Results show that geometric arrangements corresponding to bridged positions of the ligands with respect to iron atoms are always favored and stabilize intermediates, transition states and products, facilitating their formation. Binding energies of reaction products have been computed and compared with experimental measurements, and ELF analysis of the bond has been performed to rationalize trends as a function of the structure.
