CD98 is a glycoprotein[1][2] that is a heterodimer composed of SLC3A2 and SLC7A5 that forms the large neutral amino acid transporter (LAT1). LAT1 is a heterodimeric membrane transport protein that preferentially transports branched-chain (valine, leucine, isoleucine) and aromatic (tryptophan, tyrosine) amino acids.[3] LAT is highly expressed in brain capillaries (which form the blood–brain barrier) relative to other tissues.[3]
A functional LAT1 transporter is composed of two proteins encoded by two distinct genes:
- 4F2hc/CD98 heavy subunit protein encoded by the SLC3A2 gene [4]
- CD98 light subunit protein encoded by the SLC7A5 gene[5]

- INTRODUCTION: Epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) is expressed in tumors with an epithelial cell of origin, in a heterogeneous manner. Prostate cancer stem-like cells highly express EpCAM. However, little is known about how EpCAM is involved in the ability of cells to adapt to micro-environmen

- Many low birth weight infants experience failure to thrive. The amino acid, leucine, stimulates protein synthesis in skeletal muscle of the neonate but less is known about the effects of the leucine metabolite, β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB). To determine the effects of HMB on protein synthesis

- … Here we show that L-type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1) is a major transporter of essential amino acids in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). … Growing HUVECs express a certain level of LAT1. … A LAT1-specific inhibitor suppressed leucine uptake, cell proliferation, and tube formation of HUVECs. … Therefore, LAT1 acts to support effective uptake of amino acids, which is critical for the optimal function of HUVECs for angiogenesis. …
