  • Determination of lingual vascular canals in the interforaminal region before implant surgery to prevent life-threatening bleeding complications.
  • Kilic E, Doganay S, Ulu M, Celebi N, Yikilmaz A, Alkan A.Author information Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, Erciyes University, Kayseri, Turkey.AbstractOBJECTIVES: Profuse hemorrhage and airway obstruction may occur during or after the implant surgery in the interforaminal region. The prevention from this complication requires identifying the location of the mandibular lingual vascular canals (MLVCs). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anatomical variations of MLVCs and to determine the safety margins for implant placement in interforaminal region.

  • What are some tips and pearls for preserving and improving nasal function when performing a cosmetic rhinoplasty?
  • Hahn S, Becker DG.Author information Department of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.AbstractPURPOSE OF REVIEW: Understanding nasal form and function is critical in performing successful cosmetic rhinoplasty. Careful evaluation of the patient's nasal airway with identification of areas of existing or potential obstruction is important in avoiding potential pitfalls that may compromise nasal function following rhinoplasty. This article will review surgical techniques that can be utilized to preserve and improve nasal function during cosmetic rhinoplasty.

  • The role of bronchoscopy in the diagnosis and management of pediatric pulmonary tuberculosis.
  • Goussard P, Gie R.Author information Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University, Tygerberg Children's Hospital, PO Box 19063, Cape Town, South Africa.AbstractPulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is the commonest clinical form of childhood TB occurring in approximately 80% of cases. Traditionally, bronchoscopy in pediatric TB suspects was used to collect specimens for mycobacterial culture using especially bronchoalveolar lavage. New data have described the role of bronchoscopy as a more comprehensive instrument for the diagnosis and management of pulmonary TB in children. Flexible bronchoscopy is an important intervention to evaluated airways disease, collect samples for culture, relieve critical threatening airway obstruction and aid in the management of complicated pulmonary TB disease in children. Airway involvement in children suspected of pulmonary TB has been described in 41-63% of cases. The commonest airways involved are bronchus intermedius, left main bronchus and the trachea. Bronchoscopy is safe in children with severe airway obstruction. As bronchoscope images improve, the working channel size increases new applications for bronchoscopy will be developed making them more applicable in small children.
