Aerococcus is a genus in the phylum Firmicutes (Bacteria).^[1] It includes the causative agent of gaffkaemia, a disease of lobsters.^[2]

Etymology

The name Aerococcus derives from the Greek masculine-gender noun aer, aeros (ἀήρ, ἀέρος), air; New Latin masculine gender noun coccus (from Greek noun kokkos (κόκκος)), a berry; New Latin masculine gender noun Aerococcus, air coccus.^[3]

The genus contains 7 species, namely^[3]

A. christensenii Collins et al., 1999 (New Latin genitive case noun christensenii, of Christensen, named after the Danish microbiologist Jens J. Christensen)^[4]
A. sanguinicola Lawson et al., 2001 (Latin noun sanguis -inis, blood; Latin suff. -cola (from Latin noun incola), dweller; New Latin noun sanguinicola, blood-dweller)^[5]
A. suis Vela et al., 2007 (Latin genitive case noun suis, of a hog)^[6]
A. urinae Aguirre & Collins, 1992 (Latin genitive case noun urinae, of urine)^[7]
A. urinaeequi (Garvie, 1988) Felis et al., 2005 (Latin urina -ae, urine; Latin noun equus -i, horse; New Latin genitive case noun urinaeequi, from the urine of a horse, source of isolation of the type strain)^[8]
