- Biotransformation of stevioside by Leuconostoc citreum SK24.002 alternansucrase acceptor reaction.
- Musa A, Miao M, Zhang T, Jiang B.Author information State Key Laboratory of Food Science and Technology, School of Food Science and Technology, Jiangnan University, 1800 Lihu Ave., Wuxi, Jiangsu 214122, China; Sugar Institute, University of Gezira, P. O. Box 20, Wad Madani, Al Gezira, Sudan.AbstractStevioside (13-O-β-sophorosyl-19-O-β-d-glucosyl-steviol) is a non-cariogenic and low-calorigenic diterpenoid glycoside. It has a slightly bitter taste and bad aftertaste. Enzymatic modification by alternansucrase from Leuconostoc citreum SK24.002 was utilised in the biotransformation of stevioside to fully or partially remove the bitter taste of the stevioside. The effect of the reaction conditions including, time (1-24h), temperature (20-40°C), pH (4-7), donor concentration (10-100mg/ml) and enzyme concentration (0.5-2.5U/ml) were investigated in order to maximise the transglucosylation yield. The highest transglucosylation yield of approximately 43.7% was achieved at 20°C, pH 5.4 for 24h using sucrose at 10mg/ml and alternansucrase at 1U/ml. LC/MS analysis confirmed that the product was composed of mono-di- and tri- glucosylated stevioside and their isomers.

- Are Work Disability Prevention Interventions Effective for the Management of Neck Pain or Upper Extremity Disorders? A Systematic Review by the Ontario Protocol for Traffic Injury Management (OPTIMa) Collaboration.
- Varatharajan S, Côté P, Shearer HM, Loisel P, Wong JJ, Southerst D, Yu H, Randhawa K, Sutton D, van der Velde G, Mior S, Carroll LJ, Jacobs C, Taylor-Vaisey A.Author information UOIT-CMCC Centre for the Study of Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation, University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), 6100 Leslie Street, Toronto, ON, M2H 3J1, Canada, sharanya.varatharajan@uoit.ca.AbstractPurpose We conducted a systematic review to critically appraise and synthesize literature on the effectiveness of work disability prevention (WDP) interventions in workers with neck pain, whiplash-associated disorders (WAD), or upper extremity disorders. Methods We searched electronic databases from 1990 to 2012. Random pairs of independent reviewers critically appraised eligible studies using the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network criteria. Scientifically admissible studies were summarized and synthesized following best-evidence synthesis methodology. Results Of the 6,359 articles retrieved, 16 randomized controlled trials were eligible for critical appraisal and five were admissible. We found that a return-to-work coordination program (including workplace-based work hardening) was superior to clinic-based work hardening for persistent rotator cuff tendinitis. Workplace high-intensity strength training and workplace advice had similar outcomes for neck and shoulder pain. Mensendieck/Cesar postural exercises and strength and fitness exercises had similar outcomes for non-specific work-related upper limb complaints. Adding a brief job stress education program to a workplace ergonomic intervention was not beneficial for persistent upper extremity symptoms. Adding computer-prompted work breaks to ergonomic adjustments and workplace education benefited workers' recovery from recent work-related neck and upper extremity complaints. Conclusions At present, no firm conclusions can be drawn regarding the effectiveness of WDP interventions for managing neck pain, WAD, and upper extremity disorders. Our review suggests a return-to-work coordination program is more effective than clinic-based work hardening. Also, adding computer-prompted breaks to ergonomic and workplace interventions benefits workers' recovery. The current quality of evidence does not allow for a definitive evaluation of the effectiveness of ergonomic interventions.

- Accidental death via intravaginal absorption of methamphetamine.
- Jones P, Mutsvunguma R, Prahlow JA.Author information South Bend Medical Foundation, 530 N. Lafayette Blvd., South Bend, IN, 46601, USA.AbstractIn this paper a drug fatality that involved an unintended drug delivery route is described. The decedent, a 23-year-old female in custody in a county jail on suspicion of a felony drug offense, was discovered in a holding cell unconscious and unresponsive. Following unsuccessful cardiopulmonary resuscitation attempts she was pronounced dead at the scene. At autopsy a wad of multiple small loosely wrapped plastic packages held together with another layer of clear plastic was found in the decedent's vagina. The smaller plastic packages contained an off-white pasty substance that was later identified as methamphetamine. Toxicological testing of specimens collected during autopsy revealed methamphetamine in the decedent's subclavian blood, vitreous fluid, and urine at extremely high concentrations (42.6, 20.1, and 771 mg/L, respectively). Amphetamine, the active metabolite of methamphetamine, was also present in the subclavian blood, vitreous fluid, and urine at significant concentrations (1.3, 0.5, and 20.4 mg/L, respectively). The cause of death was attributed to toxic effects of methamphetamine and the manner of death was ruled accidental. This report suggests that lethal concentrations of methamphetamine may be distributed to the systemic circulation via intravaginal absorption.

- The return-to-work process of individuals sick-listed because of whiplash-associated disorder: a three-year follow-up study in a Danish cohort of long-term sickness absentees.
- Biering-Sørensen S, Møller A, Stoltenberg CD, Holm JW, Skov PG.Author information Department of Occupational Medicine, Køge Sygehus, Lykkebækvej 1, DK-4600 Køge, Denmark. pgsk@regionsjaelland.dk.AbstractBACKGROUND: The chronic course of whiplash-associated disorder (WAD) has implications for both the individual and society. It has been shown that up to 50% of patients have not yet returned to work six months after a whiplash injury. We wanted to study the return-to-work (RTW) process in individuals sick-listed for more than eight weeks in six Danish municipalities. RTW in individuals sick-listed due to WAD was compared to that in those sick-listed for other musculoskeletal disorders (MSD).
