スプライト (sprite) はラテン語のspiritusから派生した言葉である。

本来spiritusとは息を意味し、同様に息を意味するギリシャ語聖書の「プネウマ」をラテン語に翻訳する時に訳語として選ばれ、霊や精神などを意味することになった言葉である。現代英語では 「スピリット」（spirit）に相当する。

よってspriteはspiritusという言葉に類似した様々な意味を持ちうるが、特に次の意味で用いられる。

• 西洋の伝説などに登場したり、現代でも存在が語られることがある、不思議な小さな生きもの。妖精の一種とされるので、日本語ではしばしば「妖精」と訳される。スプライト (伝説の生物)、妖精、精霊、小人、小悪魔
